This year's Foursquare Day, so named because it's April 16 (4/4^2), is the location-based tool's second and in the intervening year they've racked up some impressive statistics.

This year the New York City-based company reveals it has clocked up over 2 billion check-ins from a user-base that is now 20 million strong.

Just six months ago Foursquare was boasting 1 billion check-ins and a year ago just 9.3 million users.

Foursquare Day is held every year on April 16. According to the website set up to promote the day, by fans of the tool not the company itself, it's a "grass roots event started by Tampa Bay fans of foursquare in 2010" after which "it quickly spread to communities all over the world. Foursquare Day is celebrated differently in each community. Some people have parties, some have lecture, and some simply check in."
