Consumers hungry for dining deals this holiday season

Dining is the category daily deal seekers browse more often than any other, according to a new survey from PriceGrabber. And, concludes the survey, over half of respondents intend to use daily deal websites to search for gifts this coming holiday season.

pricegrabber logo.jpgThe most-searched category on daily deal sites is food and dining with 45% of consumers looking to save on savoring local fayre.

Slightly less (40%) use daily deal sites to seek out shopping deals, 31% search for discounts on events such as concerts and festivals and a quarter seek out travel-related deals.

About a third of consumers purchase one to four deals per month, found PriceGrabber's survey of 2,088 US online consumers during May, and 15% buy at least one deal per week.

Over a third (37%) of consumers don't have a figure in mind when they go looking for a saving. "Consumers are very savvy and are getting much savvier post-recession, so it's not a dollar figure they're looking to save; it's more about finding a great experience," said Sharon Banfield, director of PR at PriceGrabber.

However, some do have expectations of how much they would like to save before entering into a deal. Twenty-five percent of shoppers said they require a saving of 25% to 49%; 19% expect a 50% to 75% discount; and 16% hope to save 15% to 24%. A hopeful 2% said they require savings of more than 75% to purchase a deal.

The coming holiday season will see many heading to daily deals sites in search of gifts. Sixty percent plan to purchase gifts from daily deals websites for Christmas and Hanukkah, 56% for a birthday and 23% for a special anniversary. Many will look to new dining experiences they can purchase for, and share with, those close to them.

"PriceGrabber recently found that 86% of shoppers said they share the great deals they find with family and friends," said Graham Jones, general manager of PriceGrabber.

"Given that the holidays are a time to reconnect with loved ones, we anticipate that fine-dining experiences will continue to be high on wish lists come December."
