Meta Platforms Inc. has instructed a number of its managers and directors to transition to individual contributor roles or leave the company, according to anonymous sources familiar with the matter. The process referred to internally as “flattening,” will see higher-level managers inform their subordinates of the directive in the coming weeks. The goal is to improve efficiency and become more nimble, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg stating that 2023 will be the “Year of Efficiency” for the company.
The recent job cuts will be carried out on an individual basis and will be more gradual than the November layoffs, which saw the company fire 13% of its workforce. Some employees feel the change is necessary due to competition within similar teams and managers overseeing only a small number of employees. According to Bloomberg, some of the affected staff will be tasked with focusing on tasks such as coding, designing and research.
Zuckerberg has previously stated that layoffs were a last resort and the company has been cutting costs through measures such as subletting office space, reducing leases at New York offices and deploying AI tools to help engineers be more productive. The CEO is focused on increasing efficiency and executing the company’s top priorities.
The company’s shares have seen an increase of over 56% this year, following Zuckerberg’s plan for a leaner organization. Despite the November layoffs and ongoing anxiety among staff, the company is pushing forward with its efforts to streamline its operations.
