About Us

After I lost nearly $10,000 forming my first LLC through overlapping services and fear-driven decisions, I built BizReport to turn those mistakes into clear guidance. It exists to help you form your company in the right order without wasting time, money, or confidence.

Back in 2024, I finally decided it was time to establish my U.S. LLC.

I assumed the whole thing would be straightforward and wouldn’t demand much research. Instead, my lack of preparation led to a series of expensive mistakes. Before I realized what was happening, I had paid $9,613 in unnecessary fees, from duplicate services I didn’t need to poorly timed decisions that could have been avoided with just a bit more digging.

The financial part is what hit me the hardest. I didn’t overspend by a little; I overspent by thousands. It was the kind of mistake that sticks with you.

And yes, the entire process dragged across six months, but not because forming an LLC actually takes that long. It was because I didn’t do enough research upfront and kept getting pulled into other tasks, delaying everything even further.

I created BizReport to help you avoid the frustrating and costly errors I made when opening my Limited Liability Company (LLC) in the United States (US). My mission is to empower you to form your own LLC and get it off to the best possible start.

Disclaimer: Let me make one thing clear. I did NOT get scammed, nor did anyone try to scam me.

I simply made a series of costly and preventable errors. My LLC service providers provided good-quality work. However, the costly outcomes were the result of my own poor choices that were not suited to my business circumstances.

My LLC Process Timeline

Starting my LLC wasn’t just expensive, it was scattered. I moved from one step to the next without a structured plan. Looking back, the problem wasn’t that the process was hard, it was that I kept taking actions before understanding what each stage required.

Every decision created a ripple effect. Hiring services too early, paying for things I didn’t need yet, mailing documents when faster options were available, and losing important paperwork all played a role in stretching the timeline longer than it should have been.

Below is a clear timeline of what I did and what I received at each stage. This table will help you see how each step connected, where delays happened, and why proper planning can save both time and money.

1. Two Mistake I Made Took Me 2 Months Of Waiting

Saving time during LLC formation is just as important as saving money. The whole process took me six months to get my LLC fully up and running, and most of that delay came from avoidable mistakes. By choosing faster filing methods and keeping key documents secure, you can move through the process much more efficiently than I did.

The lessons above pretty much sum up my whole forgettable experience on my six-month LLC formation journey.

How To Avoid Wasting Money When Forming & Running Your LLC

I compiled all the mistakes that cost me significant money. These errors drained my budget more than I expected.

1. The Total Cost Of My Journey

During six months, my mistakes added up far faster than I imagined. I spent $15,025 even though my actual cost should have been $5,412. This means I overspent nearly $10,000 because of a series of poor business decisions.

You can read the table below to see a quick breakdown of the actual amounts I paid compared to normal costs. This will show exactly how far off I was in my planning. It also reveals how much unnecessary spending came from avoidable choices.

If I formed my LLC again, I would follow a much simpler and more intentional process. Here is the key takeaways to save money:

In the next sections, I’ll walk you through my tragic story from start to finish. You’ll learn about the wrong business decisions that shaped my downfall from the start. Unfortunately, I made these before my LLC was ever formed.

The Mistakes I Made Before Even Forming My LLC

Unfortunately for me, I made two major mistakes before my LLC was even created. These would cost me thousands of dollars and months of valuable wasted time. What was supposed to be a simple preparation process turned into a deadly foundation that kick-started my overspending nightmare.

1. Hiring A Full Service Consulting Firm For Ongoing Consultation And Accounting

It all started when I hired a full service consulting firm through UpWork to guide me through the LLC formation process and handle my monthly accounting.

At the time, I assumed ongoing support was necessary, so I committed to their services from August 2024 through October 2024. The problem was that I misunderstood what I actually needed. Instead of a simple one-time consultation, I paid for continuous monthly support I wasn’t ready for.

I remained on pause throughout November and December due to my business plan have some issues and I have to wait for the EIN confirmation letter to open the bank account.

Once the EIN finally arrived and things felt stable, I resumed using their services again in January 2025 and continued through May 5, which was still a mistake on my part, and I cover this later on in the article when breaking down the full cost impact.

Their accounting and consulting came as a bundled package costing $1,250 per month. I thought this was the right level of support, but it turned out all I needed was a simple consultation or two, which should have cost around $225 per session. That misunderstanding locked me into months of overspending long before my LLC was even active.

2. Mistake 2: Paying For An LLC Formation Service Provider’s Premium Package

Shortly after this, on August 1, 2024, I hired an LLC formation service provider and purchased their premium package. This became my second major mistake before I even began the actual formation process.

Their service itself was perfectly fine, but it overlapped with what I was already paying the consulting company for. Once again, I ended up paying twice for work that I did not need.

I thought I was being thorough at the time, but I didn’t realize until much later that both services were handling similar tasks.

The Costly Decisions I Made During the LLC Formation Process

Once I finally moved into my actual LLC formation stage, I expected things to finally settle down. I thought the hard part was behind me and that the rest would be simple.

Instead, this phase brought another round of unnecessary LLC expenses, mostly because I still didn’t fully understand what I needed. I paid for add-ons I never used, services that overlapped with each other, and premium features that didn’t fit my situation at all.

When working with the LLC service provider I chose, I went with their $299 plan as my baseline package and added several extra services on top. Looking back, the $299 plan only made sense if I already knew how to handle my own accounting.

But I didn’t know how to do any of that, which made the $299 plan completely unsuitable for me. It added more stress and more wasted money on something I didn’t actually need. Their $249 plan would have been a better fit for what my business required.

Once I added up the plan and all the optional extras I selected, the total cost came to $736. Yet again, I had purchased services that I didn’t need, and the overspending continued.

In the sections below, I break down the four main mistakes I made during my LLC formation process so you can avoid repeating the same decisions.

1. Mistake 1: Still Overspending During My LLC Formation Approval

I spent $2,500 on my full service consulting firm for basic consultation and accounting services from August to October 2024, adding no real value to my formation process. If I had chosen the right services, this should have only cost me $450 for that same period.

My LLC was only formed when I hired an LLC formation service provider to handle the filing. My Articles of Organization were accepted on August 29, 2024, meaning my LLC was officially launched. On September 5, I received the approved copy of my Articles of Organization.

2. Mistake 2: Business Attorney Plan Renewals I Forgot to Cancel

My second mistake was paying for six Business Attorney Plan renewals, costing $49 each.

I already had ongoing support from my full service consulting firm, which meant my renewals should have cost me nothing at all. The LLC formation service provider included one month of attorney access, but I forgot to cancel the renewal, leading to another round of unnecessary charges.

To make things worse, the response time for attorney consultations was slow, usually taking about two days before I heard back.

My advice is simple. Use whatever attorney access you need during the first month and cancel it right away. If you end up needing it later, you can always renew intentionally. Just don’t forget to cancel it the way I did.

3. Mistake 3: Paying for Add-Ons I Did Not Actually Need

On top of my unnecessary attorney plan renewals, I paid for several extra add-on services that I actually didn’t need. While some of these are definitely helpful for others, they were wasted costs for me.

Here’s what I learned:

  • State Compliance Filings Renewal ($199): In Delaware, you’re only required to pay your Annual Franchise Tax, which is an extremely simple filing process. Therefore, this was a redundant cost that I didn’t need. Of course, in some cases, this service can be useful if you’re registering in a state with complex annual filings.
  • Beneficial Ownership Reports ($149): You can find this report online for free. Instead, I paid for it and wasted a total of $149.
  • Expedited Processing ($99): I thought that I needed expedited processing, but in reality, I was in no rush to get things done this fast. This was another wasted fee to add to the pile.
  • Founders Kit ($99): I spent six months waiting, meaning that I had more than enough time to find the Founders Kit materials myself. Therefore, I wasted $99 on something that I could have completed with no trouble at all.
  • Business Licenses and Permits ($99): In most cases, this add-on can be helpful when your LLC operates in a state with complicated licensing requirements. However, I run a media company, which means I have hardly any licensing requirements. I only realized this once it was too late, and ended up spending another $99 for no reason at all.

4. Mistake 4: Filing My EIN Application By Mail

My fourth formation mistake was filing my EIN application by mail. It took around four weeks + additional mailing time to finally receive my EIN Confirmation Letter (Form CP 575). If I had applied online or sent Form SS-4 by fax, I could have drastically reduced my waiting time and gotten my EIN much faster.

I finally received my EIN on October 23, 2024.

If you thought this might be the end of my troubles, you would unfortunately be mistaken. My business delays didn’t end here.

After receiving my EIN Confirmation Letter, I didn’t put it in a safe place and somehow lost it. I had to request an EIN Verification Letter (Form 147C), which added more unnecessary waiting time (around 2 weeks).

My takeaway from this mistake is simple. Complete your EIN application using the online portal or complete Form SS-4 and fax it to the IRS to avoid the tedious mailing delays. Once you’ve received your EIN Confirmation Letter, store it in a safe place with your official business records so you don’t lose it, as I did. The IRS will only issue you one Form 575, so keep it safe.

Overspending Even After My LLC Was Running

Fast forward to January 2025, and my LLC business was finally operational. With this, I thought I could put my expensive mistakes behind me and start to build my business empire. Unfortunately, I continued to overspend, purely because I still didn’t understand how straightforward my LLC needs actually were.

1. Mistake 1: Hiring An Overpriced Accountant For A Simple LLC

Overspending on unnecessary services. Photo: Erik Pham

I had already overspent $7,500 on simple consulting and accounting from January 2025 to May 2025. While the services themselves were fine, they brought me no real benefit because my business still had no meaningful activity during that period.

This brings us back to the timeline at the beginning of the article. Since my formation documents were filed in 2024, I was required to file a tax return for that year even though I had no accounting transactions at all. Because of that, I was charged $1,500 for my Annual Tax Return Report, which ended up being completely unnecessary.

If I had been working with the accountant I use now, I would have saved myself $3,150, which is more than half of what I paid. And for the tax return itself, the correct service should have only cost $500

2. Mistake 2: Annual Reports That I Could Have Done Myself

To add insult to injury, I kept paying for services that I could have easily handled on my own. Of course, I didn’t realize this at the time, but I’ll be sure not to make the same mistake again.

A good example is my State Compliance Filing Renewals. I should have only paid $300 for my Annual Franchise Tax. I could have avoided this fee entirely by handling this extremely simple filing process myself.
