How To Use The Oregon Business Entity Name Database?
Note: This may also be referred to as the Oregon Business Name Search or the Oregon Business Entity Search.
The state of Oregon has several search options when looking for a suitable LLC name. You should choose a method based on the information you have available and the type of search you want to perform.
Use the “Exact words in any order” search followed by “Extended search in any word order” to check your desired name. I think that this is the most reliable and time-efficient way of performing a useful name search.
1. Access The Oregon Business Filings Search Page
The Oregon Business Entity Search has 7 available search methods. However, I’ll focus on the main methods to optimize your name search.
- Business name availability check: A general check that also lists names from inactive companies. These may still be reserved or unavailable.
- Business name In exact word order (As typed): This acts like an exact match search. You should be certain of the full business name to use this method.
- Business name in exact word order (Followed by other words): This looks for business names that start with the exact words alongside ending words. Use this method if you know the start of the business name but not how it ends.
- Business name in any word order: Uses the exact words typed but allows them to be ordered differently within the name. You should be confident in the word spellings, but not the word sequence.
- Sound-alike words in exact word order: Factors in imprecise word spellings. Use this method if you’re confident about the word sequence but don’t know the exact spellings.
- Sound-alike words in any order: This looks at similar-sounding words while ignoring the word order. Useful if you know the general words but not the correct spellings and word order.
- Extended search using any word order: The most general and slowest option. It retrieves business names using alternate spellings, synonyms, and different sequences. Use this if you can only remember one or two words.
2. Guide To Using Search Methods
- You can run your name search under “Search methods” using “Exact words in any word order” (The default setting).
- I recommend running the search again using the “Extended search” option.
Following these steps ensures that you’ll see all potentially similar Oregon business names that clash with your desired Oregon LLC name.

a. Search Tips
- You shouldn’t use commas, periods, and apostrophes.
- Leaving out “Limited Liability Company”, “LLC”, and “L.L.C” streamlines your search process.
- Uppercase or lowercase letters can be used when searching.
Tip: Use the main part of your desired Oregon LLC name in the name search.
For example, when searching for the name “Bizreport Studios LLC”, first use “Bizreport Studio” followed by “Bizreport”. This is an efficient way to catch similar LLC names while reducing your time commitment.
b. Avoid Using The “Business Name Availability Check”
Don’t use the “Business Name availability Check” search option. The general search lists names from inactive companies that may be reserved or unavailable. This increases the chances that the Secretary of State will reject your Article of Organization using that name.
Instead, use the regular business name search to confirm that your LLC name is unique. This should ensure that your Articles of Organization gets approved.
3. Interpreting Your Oregon LLC Search Results
Once you’ve chosen a suitable search method, you’ll get several possible results depending on your desired LLC name. These are the four possible outputs and what they mean:
a. Your Name Is Unique With No Similar Names
A result showing that no names are similar to yours means that your LLC name is distinguishable. Your Limited Liability Company name is available to use.
For example, your desired name may be “GREEN TEA AUTO”. If the only similar names are “GREEN TEA SPA” and “GREEN TEA RESTAURANT”, your LLC name should be available.

b. Your Search Returned No Business Entity Names
Your LLC name is likely still available if no results appear. Search again using part of the name to check for similar matches.
For example, instead of searching for “BizReport Studios,” search for “Bizreport”.

c. Your Results Show The Exact Name Exists
If the search results show that the exact LLC name exists, an Oregon business is already using it. This means that it’s unavailable and you’ll need to choose another.

d. Your Search Results Show Very Similar Names
If your search results show a very similar name, your LLC name should be considered unavailable.
For example, if you type in “BLUE RIVER STUDIO LLC” and the search shows “BLUE RIVER STUDIO GROUP L.L.C.,” you may need to choose a different name, as it possibly won’t be approved.

e. What To Do If Your Desired LLC Name Isn’t Available?
You’ll need to decide on a different name or a suitable variation if your LLC name is not unique.
Tip: Don’t apply for an EIN or buy marketing materials until your LLC name is approved. This avoids wasting time or money if your name isn’t approved.

The Oregon LLC Act contains the rules and requirements for naming your Oregon business entity in Section 63.094.
You should follow each rule carefully when filing your Certificate of Formation with the state of Oregon to avoid your name being rejected. These are the five main ones to be aware of:
- You must use certain English letters and numbers.
- Adding or removing commas doesn’t create distinguishability.
- Use one of eight suitable designators in your LLC name.
- Avoid using certain designators so your name isn’t rejected.
- You cannot use restricted words and abbreviations.
1. English Language Or English Alphabet
Oregon business names can only contain the following letters and numbers:
- English alphabet letters.
- Roman numerals (I, IX, MMVII)
- Arabic numerals (1, 10, 100)
- Symbols and punctuation.
The Oregon Secretary of State has a list (Rule 160-010-0011) stating which special characters and punctuation are allowed.
2. Using Commas
Your LLC name can be filed with or without a comma. The Secretary of State will accept both versions.
For example, the LLC name “House Jimmy’s” can be filed as:
- House Jummy’s LLC.
- House Jimmy’s, LLC.
Instead of using “LLC” as your designator (ending), the state of Oregon allows a few other options.
3. Designators (Endings) That Can Be Used
The name of your Oregon LLC must contain one of the following designators:
- LLC.
- L.L.C.
- Limited Liability Company.
4. Designators That Are Not Allowed
An Oregon LLC is not allowed to sound like an Oregon Corporation or another business entity besides an LLC.
You can’t use the following words and designators in your LLC name:
- Inc.
- Incorporated.
- Corp.
- Corporation.
- Cooperative.
5. Words That Are Not Allowed
Your Oregon LLC name must not include restricted abbreviations or words. These include ones suggesting it’s a government agency, bank, or anything that may be misleading.
Words reserved for licensed professionals, such as architect, attorney, accountant, dentist, or engineer, cannot be used.
Call the Secretary of State at 503-986-2200 if you have any questions regarding restricted words for your Oregon business entity.
Ensure Your Oregon Business Name Is Distinguishable (Unique)
The Oregon business name search tool should be used to compare your desired LLC name with existing ones. You must choose a suitable variation or new name if it isn’t unique.
Here are three ways to make your Oregon LLC name distinguishable. Following this, I cover the rules and give examples of unsuitable names.
- Way 1: Use creative and unusual spellings to make your name unique.
- Way 2: Homophones are a clever way to create distinguishability.
- Way 3: You can include numerals instead of spelled-out numbers.
My recommendation: While each method is pretty easy to implement, I think that way 3 is the best. You can also use Roman numerals if you want to make your business name more unique.
1. Ways To Make Your Oregon Business Name Distinguishable
Your Oregon LLC name can be made distinguishable from other businesses using several methods.
a. Use Creative & Unusual Spellings
A creative or different spelling can make your Oregon LLC name distinguishable. This can be accomplished in several ways.
For example, your desired LLC name of “Bizreport Inc.” is already taken. In this case, your LLC could be named:
- BizReporT LLC.
- BizRep0rt LLC.
- B!zreport LLC.
b. Utilize Homophones
Business names are judged by spelling and not pronunciation in Oregon. Different spellings make names distinguishable. However, identical names do not, even if they sound different.
Homophones are words that sound the same but are spelled differently. They make business names distinguishable. For example,
- Knight Studios, LLC vs. Night Studios, LLC.
However, words that are spelled the same but sound different don’t make business names distinguishable. For example,
- Bass Boost LLC (The music term “base”) isn’t distinguishable from Bass Boost LLC (The fishing term “Bass”).
This is a key distinction to consider when using homophones to make your desired business name unique.
c. Numerals Vs. Spelled Out Numbers
Your LLC name can be distinguished by using numerals instead of spelling out the number. Similarly, Roman numerals can be used.
For example, your desired LLC name is 24 Hours LLC. However, an Oregon company called 24 Hours Corp already exists. In this case, you can use this instead:
- Twenty-Four Hours LLC.
2. Punctuation, Symbols, And Spaces
Distinguishability can’t be created by adding or removing punctuation, symbols, or spaces.
For example, if your desired Oregon LLC name is “Silver Line Consulting LLC,” it’s not available if any of the following are used:
- Silver Line Consulting, L.L.C.
- Silver “Line” Consulting” Inc.
- Silver-Line-Consulting Inc.
- Silver/Line Consulting, Limited Liability Co.
3. Plural Words, Singular Words, And Possessive Words
Making a word plural or possessive by adding the letter “s” doesn’t create distinguishability.
For example, if your desired name is “Maple Grove Bakery LLC”, it’s not suitable if any of the following are used:
- Maple Groves Bakery LLC.
- Maples Grove Bakery L.L.C.
- Maple Grove Bake Inc.
4. Capitalization
Capitalizing different words in your desired Oregon LLC name won’t make it unique.
For example, if your desired LLC name is “Bright Path Solutions LLC”, it’s not suitable if the following capitalizations are used:
- bright path solutions LP.
- BRIGHT PATH SOLUTIONS Inc.
- bRiGhT PaTh SoLuTiOnS LLC.
5. Filler Words
You can’t create distinguishability by adding non-meaningful or filler words to your LLC name.
These include:
- Articles (a, an, the).
- Conjunctions (and, but, or).
- Prepositions (at, for, by, in, to, plus, with).
- Symbols (@, +, &).
For example, when your desired LLC name is “Silver Consulting LLC”, it’s not available if any of the following filler words are used:
- Silver Line and Consulting L.L.C.
- Silver Line & Consulting Inc.
- The Silver Line Consulting LLC.
- By Silver Line Consulting Corp.
6. Designators
Adding designators (Endings) to your LLC doesn’t create distinguishability.
For example, your desired name is “Maple Grove LLC”. It’s still unsuitable if any of the following designators are used in the Oregon Business Name Search:
- Maple Grove, Inc.
- Maple Grove, Corp.
- Maple Grove, L.L.C.
What To Do If Your Oregon Business Name Is Rejected?
Frequently Asked Questions
You do not need a name reservation to establish an LLC in Oregon. This is a pointless step and a waste of money. Instead, use your preferred LLC name to register your Articles of Organization.
Your Oregon LLC name needs to contain one allowable designator at the end. Commonly used ones include LLC, L.L.C, and Limited Liability Company.
No, you don’t need a “Doing Business As” or “DBA” for your Oregon LLC. A DBA, also known as a Trade Name or Trademark, allows your Oregon LLC to conduct business under a different name from the one listed on its Articles of Organization.
You need to file an Assumed Business Name Registration online or by mail if you want your LLC to conduct business in Oregon using a different name from its actual and legal one. This can be done by paying a $50 fee to the Secretary of State. Read the Secretary of State’s Assumed Business Name Guide for more information.
When filing a Trademark for your Oregon LLC, it needs to be distinguishable from existing business names. You have no limit to the number of Trademarks or Trade Names that your LLC can have.
Your business name needs to be “distinguishable upon the records” governed by the Secretary of State. No two businesses can use the same name. This means that you cannot register your LLC if a business name already exists with the name you want.
For example, you want to create an LLC called “Meadowlark Landscapers LLC”. However, “Meadowlark Landscapers, Inc.” operates in another municipality. Your LLC name is identical to a current Oregon Corporation. Therefore, your name is indistinguishable and cannot be used.
Choosing your Oregon LLC name is an important step. It can be your brand name or something different.
Use these tips to pick an appropriate business name:
– Brainstorm company names without filtering.
– List your company’s associations and features.
– Review and create different variations.
– Take a break and revisit with fresh ideas.
– Read different names out loud and ask for feedback.
– Repeat the same process while refining the list.
If you’re stuck, try this quick decision trick. Close your eyes, count to 10, and choose a name. Your instinct often reveals the best name.
No, you can’t use the name of another Oregon entity. The name must be unique and can’t match an existing business name, regardless of the entity type. If the business is dissolved, its name becomes available.
File an Amendment form with the Secretary of State to change your LLC name.
Follow these steps to start an LLC in Oregon:
1. Choose an available LLC name.
2. Appoint a Registered Agent.
3. File your Articles of Organization in Oregon.
4. Complete and sign your LLC Operating Agreement.
5. Obtain your EIN (Tax ID Number) from the IRS.
6. Open your business LLC bank account.
7. Check if you need a sales tax or business license in Oregon.
