What Is The North Carolina Business Name Search?
Note: The North Carolina Business Name Search is also referred to as the North Carolina Business Name Search or the North Carolina Business Entity Search. All names refer to the same tool and provide access to the same state records.
Before I tell you how to use it, what exactly is the Business Name Search in North Carolina? It’s pretty much a useful online search tool provided by the North Carolina SOS that lets you compare registered businesses already on the public database against your desired business name. Search for different business types, including LLCs, Corporations, Partnerships, and assumed DBA names using their official business name, ID number, or Registered Agent details.
It’s really important to note that you need to use the name search tool before reserving your desired name or submitting your formation documents to prevent potential name conflicts and rejections. Without doing things this way, you vastly increase your chances of filing delays and rejections.
How To Use The North Carolina Secretary of State Business Name Search
The North Carolina Business Registration Search helps you find a desired LLC name that’s unique and available to use in the state.
To begin, type your desired LLC name into the “Organizational Name” field on the portal’s homepage. Make sure you leave the dropdown fields unchanged. Then, click “Search.”

Pro tip: Enter the core part of your desired LLC name when using the North Carolina SOS Business Name Search.
Example: Your desired LLC name is “DunnoStag Studios LLC”.
- Search for “DunnoStag Studio.”
- Run a separate search using “DunnoStag.”
This identifies existing business names that are similar and may cause name conflicts.
Understanding Your North Carolina LLC Name Search Results
Review your results after completing the North Carolina Business Name Availability Search to check if your desired LLC name can be registered in the state.
1. Scenario 1: No Business Names Overlap With Your Desired Name
Your desired LLC name is likely unique and available to use if the system shows “No results matching your search.”

So, what now? Searching again, using just part of your desired LLC name to be extra thorough. If we take “Weissvater LLC” as your desired business name, try “Weissvater” to confirm that no existing businesses are already using it.
2. Scenario 2: Names Similar To Your Desired Name Appear
If the system shows names that are “similar to your preferred name,” you have a few different scenarios to consider. Use the below examples as a reference to work out how you can successfully modify your desired name when this happens.

a. Results That Are Not Too Similar
b. Identical Search Results
c. Results That Are Too Similar
Should You Reserve Your LLC’s Business Name?
You do NOT need to reserve your LLC name before filing your North Carolina Articles of Organization. However, you can reserve your name if you require additional time to prepare your formation documents or want to stop other businesses from using your name.

You can make an LLC name reservation using two main methods:
- Use the Application to Reserve a Business Entity Name page to submit an online name reservation.
- Download the North Carolina Application and complete Form BE-03 to reserve your name. Then, mail it to the address below.
SECRETARY OF STATE, BUSINESS REGISTRATION DIVISION
P.O. box 29622
Raleigh, NC 27626-0622
You must pay a $30 filing fee, regardless of your filing method. Your name will be reserved for 120 days if it’s approved by the state.
North Carolina LLC Key Naming Requirements

For BizReport readers ONLY, ZenBusiness checks name availability and forms your LLC for FREE.
Your North Carolina Business name must be unique and clearly distinguishable from existing business names on record with the Secretary of State. This is set under GD § 55D-21(b)(1) and GD § 55D-21(c).

So then, what exactly are the key naming requirements, and how do you interpret them? Let’s take a look below.
1. Using Commas In Your LLC Name
First up, you don’t need to worry about using commas or including one before “LLC” once you’ve made your choice. Both versions will be accepted by the SOS, regardless of what you do.
Note: This is purely a stylistic choice and something you really don’t need to worry about. Names will have the same legal meaning and effect, so just use what you feel comfortable with or prefer.
2. Required Endings
Next up, your business name must include one of the approved designators set forth under GS § 55D-20(a)(2). The great news is that you can choose between several name endings, such as Limited Liability Company, L.L.C, LLC, Ltd. Liability Co., Limited Liability Co., or Ltd. Liability Company.

Note: LLC names that include the words “Low-profit limited liability company” or the abbreviation “L3C” will be accepted, if used before January 1, 2014. However, you can’t keep using these terms if your LLC amends its Articles of Organization.
3. Restricted Designators
So I’ve mentioned required designators, but what about restricted ones? In simple terms, you can’t include words that suggest you’re a different entity type, such as “Corp,” “Inc,” or “Corporation.” Try using the name “Adler Inc,” and it’ll be rejected as it suggests that you’re a Corporation and not an LLC.
Don’t bother using partnership designators such as “Limited Partnership,” “LP,” or “LLP,” or charitable or nonprofit designators like “Nonprofit” or “Foundation.” If you do, you’ll again get your name rejected without the required approval.
Examples:
- “Adler LLP” is not allowed as the designation is reserved for Partnerships.
- “Adler Foundation” is not allowed as the designation is associated with charitable organizations.
4. Statutory Prohibitions
Certain words and phrases are prohibited by law when choosing a business name, unless approved by the relevant regulatory agency. You can check the full list here: Feasibility of Name.
I’ve included an example table below for you to reference:
| Prohibited words | Requires approval from |
|---|---|
| Bank, Banker, Banking | North Carolina Commissioner of Banks |
| Mutual | May not be used unless formed under Article 16 of Chapter 54 of the North Carolina General Statutes |
| Trust | North Carolina Commission of Banks |
| Realtor | North Carolina Real Estate Commission |
| Architect, Architecture, Architectural | North Carolina Board of Architecture |
| Certified Public Accountant and abbreviations of such | North Carolina State Board of Certified Public Accountant Examiners |
| Cooperative, Co-op | North Carolina Secretary of State may not use unless created under Chapter 54, Article 16 or 19 |
| Engineer, Engineering | North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors |
| Insurance | North Carolina Secretary of State |
| Pharmacy, Prescription Drug, Drug, Prescription, Rx, Apothecary | North Carolina Board of Pharmacy |
| Surveyor, Survey, Surveying | North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors |
| Wholesale | North Carolina Secretary of State |
Additionally, avoid using the following in addition to the state-restricted terms:
- Inappropriate, obscene, or vulgar language.
- Misleading or deceptive wording.
- Names that closely resemble existing registered or trademarked names.
Examples:
- “Adler Realtor LLC” requires approval from the Real Estate Division.
- “Cursing LLC” is not allowed as it’s seen as vulgar.
Tip: I advise using simple and neutral wording if you’re unsure. Avoid using terms associated with universities, banks, and licensed professions, unless you’ve obtained approval.
Making Your North Carolina LLC Name Distinguishable
The state offers several ways to make your LLC name distinguishable from existing businesses.
If your name is unrestricted but seems similar to an existing business name, you have several options. Read my methods below to create a legally-distinguishable name variation.
1. Creative Spellings
You can change your LLC name spellings to create a unique version.
For example, “L@usann3 LLC” is distinct from “Lausanne LLC.”
2. Word Variation
Add a prefix of suffix to make your name distinguishable. Or, use a different word form.
For example, “Karn Creative LLC” varies from “Karn Creativity LLC.”
3. Word Orders
Changing word orders should make your LLC name unique and distinguishable.
For example, “Household Services of Amy LLC” is different from “Amy Household Service LLC.”
4. Abbreviations
Still need to create a unqiue name? Try replacing an acronym with the full term or even using the abbreviation, such as changing “NC Murphy Family LLC” to “North Carolina Murphy Family LLC.” You’re well within your rights to swtich between full words and abreviations as much as you wish to try create uniqueness.
5. Roman Numerals
Besides looking cool, you can try using Roman numerals instead of Arabic ones to create a unique name that’ll be accepted. If we put this into practice, you could use “II” instead of “2” or “MMXVI” instead of “2016,” and take the name “985 Mystique LLC” and turn it into “CMLXXXV Mystique LLC.”
6. Translation
If you’re good with languages, why don’t you try using them to create uniqueness? Of course, you’ll need to consider who’ll still actually be able to understand it, but it might help get your desired name over the line. You could try using “Bleu Mond” instead of “Blue Moon,” or “Weisser Adler LLC” instead of “White Eagle LLC.”
What Won’t Make Your North Carolina LLC Name Unique
Your name will be rejected if it doesn’t satisfy North Carolina’s LLC naming rules and requirements.
I’ve outlined the essential rules below, along with some useful examples. This should hopefully help you choose an appropriate LLC name.
1. Designator Modifications
Using different business designators (name endings) does NOT create distinguishability.
Example: Your desired LLC name is “Plum House LLC.”
It’s not available if any of the following appear in the North Carolina Business Registration Search:
- Plum House, Inc.
- Plum House, Corp.
- Plum House, L.L.C.
2. Filler Words
You can NOT add non-meaningful words such as “the,” “a,” “an,” “and,” “&,” “of,” and “or” to create a unique business name.
Adding these filler words without changing your word order doesn’t create distinguishability in the state:
- Articles: a, an, the.
- Conjunctions: and, or.
- Prepositions: of, by, in, on.
So, your desired name is “Finstance Farms LLC.” It’s NOT available if names such as “The Finstance Farms LLC,” On Finstance Farms Inc,” or “Finstance and Farms L.L.C.” can be seen on the North Carolina Business Registration Search.
3. Punctuation And Formatting
It doesn’t quite cut it to use special characters, punctuation, or spacing changes when you’re trying to create something unique. The state will quickly see these names as the same if the only differences involve changes in periods, hyphens, commas, and spacing.
In this example, John really wants to use “Blake Stone Store LLC” and performs a name search before filing his formation documents. According to the points above, if names such as “Blake Stone-Store Inc.,” “Blake/Stone Store Limited Liability Co.,” or “BlakeStone Store LLC.” come up, he’ll need to try something different.
4. Capitalization
Things aren’t as easy as just capitalizing letters to create uniqueness in North Carolina. These names are seen as the same, regardless of whether you’ve used uppercase, lowercase, or title case letters. This doesn’t mean to say that you can’t choose your preferred style, but it won’t give you a unique name.
If I take “Light Hause LLC” as an example for this rule, names like “lIGHT hAUSE LLC.,” “LIGHT HAUSE LLC.,” and “light hause LLC.” would be seen as the same by the state.
5. Arabic Numerals
There’s no point trying to replace words with Arabic numerals when deciding on your business name, as the state will still reject it. To illustrate this point, “Four Seasons Cleaning LLC” and “4 Seasons Cleaning LLC” are considered to be the same.

Frequently Asked Questions
Nope, don’t bother reserving a business name as its unecessary in most cases and just costs money that you don’t need to spend. Just file your formation documents after confirming name availability using my points above.
Your North Carolina LLC name must include an approved designator (ending). The most common ones are:
– LLC
– Limited Liability Company
– Ltd. Liability Co.
You don’t need to file a DBA (“Doing Business As”) application when operating in North Carolina. A DBA, also known as an “Assumed Business Name,” allows your LLC to operate using a different name from its true and registered legal name listed in the Articles of Organization.
You must file an Assumed Business Name Certificate with the Register of Deeds in your operating location if you want to conduct business under a different name. In this case, a $28 filing fee must be made payable to the Registry of Deeds.
You can find a list of the North Carolina Register of Deeds offices and the Assumed Business Name Certificate Form online. You have no limit on the number of Assumed Business Names that you can register.
