LegalZoom Reviews – LLC Formation Services
So, LegalZoom offers three seperate service packages: Basic, Pro, and Premium. You’ll receive more support as you go up the tier list.
Bear in mind that LegalZoom doesn’t include a free Registered Agent service in any of their packages. I’ll cover this in more detail later in my article.
Remember, having an official agent in place is a mandatory legal requirement when forming your LLC. Because of this, you would need to handle the primary duties by yourself, purchase the seperate add-on service, or hire a professional third-party to get everything done for you. This is definitely something to think about if you choose to go with them.
The table below provides a simple breakdown of the different features and the respective costs. You should be able to see exactly what you get for each tier.
| Features | Basic | Pro | Premium |

1. Basic Package ($0 + State Fee)
The entry-level package covers the core baseline procedures required to officially register your LLC. Complete a straightforward questionnaire so LegalZoom has your essential business info. This includes your desired LLC name and the state where you’re planning to get things started. Once completed, they’ll take things from there.
There’s no need to check if your desired name is available using the state portal. LegalZoom will handle that for you. They’ll also notify you if there are any issues with your name. Once everything checks out, they’ll get your formation documents filed on behalf of your business.
Remember that you will only be given free assistance when forming your LLC. You still need to pay the required state fee.
If you choose the basic package, you’ll be offered several upsells on multiple pages when navigating the website. I’ve discussed each one in detail below.
a. Essential Documents
The essential documents service is a group of additional packages. It brings together an Operating Agreement, Employer Identification Number (EIN), and access to a digital legal template library.
You get all of the documents included as part of the paid tier. Therefore, if you do require them, I recommend going with the Pro or Pro Premium plan to get the additional benefits. If $249 is a little out of your price range and you don’t need things such as Attorney guidance, you can simply stay at this tier and purchase things separately. This means that it’ll just cost the max $199 one-time package fee instead of $249 annually.
LegalZoom has put these additional services into three paid tier levels, giving you plenty of options.
- $99 package gets you a standalone Operating Agreement, which LegalZoom builds using your answers to a few quick questions.
- For $159, you get both the Operating Agreement and an official EIN.
- Step up to $199, and they give you the same Operating Agreement and EIN bundle, plus full access to their entire legal form library
b. Banking Offers
LegalZoom works with several financial service providers and financial institutions. You currently have two options: Mercury and Bank of America.
If you choose this service, LegalZoom will share your business info so your chosen partner can contact you to open a dedicated business bank account. You’ll need this to keep your personal assets and business finances seperate.
c. Expedited Processing & Founder’s Kit
This handy package speeds everything up. The brand will file your state documents in 1 business day instead of you having to wait 5 to 14 business days for standard processing. Even though this speeds things up, you still need to rely on the Secretary of State processing times. These can sometimes vary. If you choose this service, LegalZoom prioritizes your order, not the state.
You’ll get a branded two-ring binder and notebook, your printed formation docs, and a checklist detailing the next steps if you choose the Founder’s Kit.
I would personally say that the expedited service is only really worth it if you’re in a big rush. The Founder’s Kit isn’t really needed, as you can simply get your formation docs directly from the state and print them yourself.
2. Pro Package ($249/year + State Fee)
Opting for the Pro Package means that you get everything included in the Basic Package + some handy add-ons.
- EIN assistance.
- A complete Operating Agreement.
- 30 days of unlimited 30-minute business attorney consultations. Note that this will auto-renew at $49, so make sure you cancel if you no longer require assistance.
- A website.
- Legal templates.
- 1 year of access to eSignature
- One copyright registration per month (30-day subscription).
I would say that this package is pretty well-suited to the majority of LLC owners. You’ll get your LLC formed, coverage on your essential document filings, and features designed to get your business up and running efficiently in no time at all.
However, if you don’t think you need these extra services, you can just stay at the free tier and add any essential documents separately.
3. Premium Package ($299/year + State Fee)
Finally, the Premium Package covers every feature from the Basic and Pro Plans. You will also get a 6-month bookkeeping trial, which renews at $9.99 per month.
This is an excellent option if you want the maximum hands-off support from the get-go. You can mostly sit back and let LegalZoom do all the work for you.
LegalZoom Registered Agent Service Review
Unfortunately, LegalZoom doesn’t include a free Registered Agent service in any of their LLC formation packages. Other companies like ZenBusiness and Northwest do. Therefore, you’ll have to purchase this separately for $249 per month. This is on top of your formation service cost, meaning that fees can quickly add up.
Their agent service handles tasks just like any other market provider.
- Business documents will be scanned and uploaded so you get digital access from anywhere with unlimited storage.
- They’ll use their business address instead of your own. This ensures that sensitive personal details remain off the public record.
- You get a compliance calendar and email reminders to ensure you don’t miss important state deadlines.
Generally speaking, I believe that you can get better deals elsewhere. You’ll find several Registered Agent providers on the market, with each pretty much offering the same things.
Even so, this can be a good option if you’ve formed your LLC and want to change your agent service to a reliable brand like LegalZoom. They’ll complete the paperwork required to switch and cover any state fees.
LegalZoom Additional LLC Services Review
1. Compliance Filings
This service is designed to keep your LLC’s good standing status with the state. Keeping this in check comes down to three primary requirements. Note that these details vary by state.
- Required business licenses.
- Your initial Report.
- The Annual Report.
LegalZoom builds its recurring packages around these core requirements. However, honestly speaking, the way they’ve presented their offers across different site pages is kinda messy. You could quickly end up having several duplicate add-ons if you’re not sure what you’re doing. I’ve broken these down below so you know exactly what’s in front of you.
a. Business License Report ($99 Per Year)
First up, the business license report. LegalZoom will assign a team with the primary job of reviewing the state laws and checking the applicable licenses needed for your chosen business setup. It takes hours of valuable time to research these all by yourself. Along with this, they’ll continuously monitor changes and let you know about upcoming updates so you’re prepared ahead of time.
However, they won’t actually apply for or retrieve any of your required licenses. You’ll still need to contact the relevant licensing agencies, complete the application forms, and pay any necessary fees.
b. Initial & Annual Report Filing ($199 Per Year)
LegalZoom will make a handy personalized LLC compliance calendar and handle your Initial and Annual Report submission processes. Note that you’ll have to pay the mandatory state filing fees on top of this package price.
This could be an excellent add-on if you regularly forget to follow your state deadlines or you’re completely overrun with your daily business operations.
c. Full Compliance Coverage ($299 Per Year)
As I said above, LegalZoom’s site can get pretty confusing. Their Full Complaince Coverage package is the main reason why. The company markets it across several pages but under slightly different names.
For example, they label this tier as the “Business License Report plus Compliance Filings” on the Business License Report page but change this to “Compliance Filings plus Licenses & Permits” on the Annual Report page. These are the same feature bundles but with slightly different names.
Just know that both packages cover both of the individual services mentioned above if you choose to sign up. Make sure you don’t add them separately, or you’ll be stuck with double changes for exactly the same services.
2. Business Changes Filings
LegalZoom provides several additional services alongside helping to keep your LLC in good standing. They’ll handle official state updates as your business grows and evolves. The plan covers everything from filing formal Articles of Amendment to completing entity conversions.
The brand maintains a detailed site directory. This allows you to browse the specific offerings to assess the suitability of each one. Just make sure that you check the fine print to see what each service includes and what it misses out. This ensures that you don’t run into any unexpected surprises at a later date.
LegalZoom Business Attorney Plans
If you go with this LegalZoom plan, you’ll get access to the brand’s own network of verified business lawyers so you can contact them whenever a legal headache comes about. The Pro and Pro Premium LLC formation packages that I discussed above both include a 30-day free trial. Following this, you can continue your subscription using a 6-month or 12-month prepaid deal. You’ll get a 10% discount if you choose to go with the full year plan.
This is basically like having your own mini legal department at your disposal. A lawyer will double-check the legal documents anytime that you need to handle a contract, ensuring that nothing sneaks past you. On top of this, you have unlimited 30-minute phone consults to discuss legal matters.
Note: A “new legal matter” is a distinct legal issue/document that you haven’t already given to an attorney in the network.
You’ll also get a few additional perks on top of the benefits stated above.
- A 1-hour annual business checkup consultation. This becomes available once you’ve used the plan for more than six months.
- Unlimited access to the brand’s built-in eSignature software.
- 10% discount on trademark registrations, filings, and other standard LegalZoom offerings.
- 25% discount on specialized legal work. This is handled by attorneys in the their network.
There’s one thing to note regarding the 25% legal work discount. This applies to standard everyday legal issues. You’ll have to pay out of your own pocket if you need a lawyer for bigger issues, such as representing you in court. That 25% price drop cuts down your overall bill.
If you look at the bigger picture, this is a really great service for complex businesses that require constant legal assistance. If you’re a small company with straightforward needs, this subscription isn’t worth your money.

LegalZoom Service Overall Reviews
1. Should You Choose This Company?
LegalZoom leads the way if you value working with an LLC formation service with strong brand recognition. They could be a perfect fit if your budget allows.
Their extensive customer base, wide range of additional tools, and long track record make them a well-trusted company for those needing professional guidance during the early business formation stages.
What sets them apart from other competitors is their legal document library and optional attorney guidance. If you’re a business owner requiring ongoing legal assistance and need access to reliable documents and support, these resources can be particularly valuable.
2. Cost Value
This one is quite hard to say. They’re totally worth the money if you use every service that you’ve paid for and have the cash. However, if you’re on a tight budget, the brand’s plan rates are pretty high when compared to other providers.
3. Customer Support
You’ll get reliable customer support via email and phone. This gives you several ways to get assistance if you need it. Customers note that the phone support is responsive and offers quick answers, which offers dependable help if you have time-sensitive questions. You also have access to email support, providing users a great way of receiving comprehensive explanations if you have a complex inquiry.
A big benefit of going with LegalZoom is the brand’s extended support hours. Their support team is available from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT, and on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT.
This makes it much easier for business owners to get assistance outside of standard operating hours. If you’re on a busy schedule, this is especially useful.
4. Ease Of Use
Using LegalZoom to form your LLC feels simple and efficient. You’ll unfortunately face several upsell screens on their website, but these are pretty easy to navigate without getting annoyed.
The website layout and design are pretty accessible. As I said above, there may be a couple of confusing spots, so make sure that you review everything carefully before paying to avoid paying for anything twice.
5. Included Features
LegalZoom stands out from the crowd here. They’ll cover all of your operating requirements and help you manage every task using one handy dashboard to save valuable time. This is especially valuable as a first-time business owner.
Here’s something I didn’t mention. They’ll also take care of your personal legal affairs, including things like living trusts and estate planning. So as you can see, their coverage stretches all the way from business tasks to personal life matters.

1. LegalZoom vs. ZenBusiness
Both providers cater to several LLC setups and operational demands. Even so, I recommend going with LegalZoom if you need ongoing legal counsel and personal legal assistance. ZenBusiness is the better option if you’re a small to mid-sized business only requiring daily operational tools.
In terms of standalone add-on price points, ZenBusiness costs significantly less across the board. This is something to consider if you’re on a strict budget.
Note: Read my detailed comparison for LegalZoom vs ZenBusiness.
2. LegalZoom vs. Northwest Registered Agent
If I’m going only on price, Northwest is the standout winner. They charge a single upfront $39 fee and throw in a full free year of Registered Agent service, which renews at $125 annually. This is substantially cheaper than LegalZoom’s entry plan, as you’ll need to pay $249 a year for a seperate agent service.
LegalZoom starts to pull ahead when it comes to add-on services. While Northwest provides basic extras like business phone lines and websites, it pales in comparison to LegalZoom’s huge variety of personal and business legal help.
Here’s the bottom line. If you want complete peace of mind and need every legal task handled for you, go with LegalZoom if you have the budget. Northwest is the better option if you need simple, no-frills LLC filing help and you’re working with a tight budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
The biggest concern when working with LegalZoom is the high price tag. Even so, they’re worth the cost if you have the budget. With several upsells built into the LLC formation process, make sure you understand what you’re paying for first.
Yes, LegalZoom is generally cheaper than hiring a private attorney. You’ll also get 25% off if you’re dealing with a complex legal issue.
Both brands offer LLC formation services and added legal forms. However, LegalZoom focuses on business formation processes, while Rocket Lawyer operates as a legal services company that also provides formation assistance.
