2. How To Find Your EIN Online

Misplace your EIN Confirmation Letter (CP 575), and you unfortunately won’t be able to get a duplicate. Even if you forget to download your online copy, you’ll need to go through a separate process to get your number back.

To sort things out, you’ll need to work directly with the IRS. Ask them for an EIN Verification letter (147C) to replace your old one. It’ll be the same number, but the letter itself will look different.

The EIN Confirmation Letter (CP 575) and the EIN Verification Letter (147C) are both considered to be official documents.

Either one of these documents can be used at banks or government offices.

2. Important Things To Remember Before Applying

When you make a change from a single-member LLC to a multi-member LLC, or vice versa, this change mandates additional paperwork for both the IRS and the State.

You must update your Operating Agreement if you transfer ownership.

Your status as a resident or non-resident of the U.S. will determine the methods available for you to apply for an EIN.

  • U.S. resident: Apply online, by mail, or by fax.
  • Non-U.S. resident: Only apply by mail or fax.

Note: Obtaining your LLC EIN by mail or fax is slower. I recommend using mail or fax only if you receive an EIN reference number error or if the IRS instructs you to do so.

4. How To Apply For An EIN (Non-U.S. Residents)

Non-U.S. residents who do not have a SSN or ITIN can only apply for an EIN by mail or fax.

Form SS-4 must be completed and submitted by mail or fax to the IRS.

Once you get through:

  • Press option 1 to speak English.
