EIN Overview
Your EIN is a 9-digit number specifically created by the IRS and issued to your LLC. The EIN is an identifier unique to your LLC, like how your social security number belongs only to you and is your personal identification number. This unique number is a legal entity and is used by the IRS for tax purposes.
Any EIN application process through the IRS is free of charge, regardless of the mode of application, phone, mail, or fax. Here are the primary roles of an EIN:
- Establish a banking or credit account for your LLC.
- File all required tax documents-local, state, and federal.
- Apply for your LLC business license and any required permits.
- Structure your LLC employee payroll.
- Initiate credit or loan applications necessary for your LLC to function.
Note: Your EIN is not the same as your Oregon State Tax ID number. An EIN is issued by the IRS. Your Oregon State Tax ID number originates from the Oregon Department of Revenue.
1. EIN Other Names
You may use several different names under the same EIN, such as with a single owner of an LLC.
Below are listed some of the most common terms you may find. Become familiar with the terms and their abbreviations, as they can be confusing.
| Group | Terms |
|---|---|
| Abbreviation | EIN FEIN |
| Full term | Employer Identification Number Federal Employer Identification Number |
| Tax-related terms | Federal Tax ID Federal Tax Identification Number Tax ID Tax ID Number IRS Number |
2. How To Find Your EIN Online
Misplace your EIN Confirmation Letter (CP 575), and you unfortunately won’t be able to get a duplicate. Even if you forget to download your online copy, you’ll need to go through a separate process to get your number back.
To sort things out, you’ll need to work directly with the IRS. Ask them for an EIN Verification letter (147C) to replace your old one. It’ll be the same number, but the letter itself will look different.
The EIN Confirmation Letter (CP 575) and the EIN Verification Letter (147C) are both considered to be official documents.
Either one of these documents can be used at banks or government offices.
How Do You File An EIN Application For Your Oregon LLC?
Exclusive Deal! ZenBusiness will form your LLC for $0 plus state fee.
Avoid filing rejection and costly mistakes with FREE ZenBusiness guidance.
Wait for your LLC to be approved before filing for an EIN.
1. Reasons To Wait Until LLC Approval
- Should your LLC be approved and the official business name on your Articles of Organization is the same as the one on your EIN Confirmation Letter (CP 575), you can use that EIN.
- For an LLC that is rejected, you must submit another application to the state and wait for approval. After re-filing, you must obtain a new 9-digit EIN from the IRS. The old EIN must be canceled.

2. Important Things To Remember Before Applying
Formalize your LLC membership organization before applying for your EIN.
When you make a change from a single-member LLC to a multi-member LLC, or vice versa, this change mandates additional paperwork for both the IRS and the State.
You must update your Operating Agreement if you transfer ownership.
Your status as a resident or non-resident of the U.S. will determine the methods available for you to apply for an EIN.
- U.S. resident: Apply online, by mail, or by fax.
- Non-U.S. resident: Only apply by mail or fax.

3. How To Apply For An EIN (U.S. Citizens & U.S. Residents)
Basically, if you have a Social Security Number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), I recommend the online method.
This method gives you the quickest approval time, with your unique EIN provided and ready for download at the end of the 15-minute session.
Check out my comprehensive guide on Applying For An EIN Online.
Note: Obtaining your LLC EIN by mail or fax is slower. I recommend using mail or fax only if you receive an EIN reference number error or if the IRS instructs you to do so.
4. How To Apply For An EIN (Non-U.S. Residents)
Non-U.S. residents who do not have a SSN or ITIN can only apply for an EIN by mail or fax.
Form SS-4 must be completed and submitted by mail or fax to the IRS.

EIN Approval (EIN Confirmation Letter)
When the IRS issues an EIN for your Oregon LLC, you will get an EIN Confirmation Letter (CP 575). The CP-575 is official validation that your LLC has been assigned an EIN and that you are considered an employer.
The method you used to apply for your EIN will indicate how you get your confirmation.
However, should you apply online, your EIN is processed right away, and you can download the EIN Confirmation Letter (CP 575) when your session ends.
Applications made by mail or fax can take several weeks to process. When you file like this, you will receive the EIN Confirmation Letter by mail.

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Contact Information
For any questions regarding your EIN application, call the IRS at 1-800-829-4933.
IRS holds office hours from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M., Monday through Friday.
Once you get through:
- Press option 1 to speak English.
- After pushing option 1 for English, push option 1 for Employer Identification Numbers.
- For “If you already have an EIN, but you can’t remember it, etc.,” press option 3.
It is important to note that pressing option 3 is the only way to reach a live person.
Note: I advise you to call the IRS during opening hours, 7 A.M., to avoid long hold times. Note that the IRS does not provide you with legal or tax advice. They will only respond to questions about the EIN application process.
Frequently Asked Questions
You acquire the EIN directly from the IRS, and it costs $0.
Apply for your EIN directly from the IRS online, by mail, or by fax. I advise the online method since it’s the quickest and easiest, but only if you are a U.S. resident. Non-US residents will have to complete the SS-4 form and send it to the IRS by mail or fax.
No. The EIN is issued by the IRS. Your Oregon Tax ID is issued by the Oregon Department of Revenue.
