Why You Need To Get An EIN For Your LLC In Arizona

An EIN is a unique 9-digit number issued by the IRS that acts as your Taxpayer Identification Number. It helps safeguard your Social Security Number (SSN), reducing the risk of identity theft.

These are some of the important business functions that you can perform once you have your EIN:

  • File federal, state, and local tax documents: This ensures that your LLC has a separate tax identity.
  • Manage employee payroll: Allows you to do your payroll reporting and employee taxes.
  • Open a business bank account: Most Arizona banks require an EIN when opening a business bank account.
  • Apply for business licenses: Most local and state agencies require an EIN during the application process.
  • Get lines of business credit and loans: You’ll need an EIN in most cases to secure a line of business credit or a loan.
  • Get a business credit card: Most Arizona banks require an EIN before giving you a business credit card.

Save time and avoid the hassle with professional support without paying anything upfront.

You can file your EIN application online, by mail/fax, or by phone. I’ve gone into more detail regarding which one is best for you below.

1. How To Get An EIN For U.S. Citizens Or U.S. Residents

If you’re a U.S. resident and you have a Social Security Number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), it is best to apply for your EIN online. Applications are processed immediately.

If you follow my guide, it should take around 15 minutes. As soon as you finish, you’ll get your EIN Confirmation Letter CP 575. This is also why I don’t recommend the mailing or faxing methods, unless you get a reference number error when filing online.

Note: I’ve written a step-by-step guide on How To File For An EIN Online.

2. How To Get An EIN For Non-U.S. Citizens

You’re still able to get an EIN for your LLC if you’re not a U.S. citizen.

However, you can’t apply online as you don’t have an SSN or an ITIN. In this case, you’ll need to file your application by mail or fax.

All non-U.S. citizens must complete Form SS-4 and send it to the IRS when filing for an EIN.

Follow my detailed guide if you need help completing your EIN Application Process As A Foreigner.

Once your EIN application is approved, the IRS will issue you an EIN Confirmation Letter (CP 575).

If you’ve filed your application online, they’ll process it immediately. Your EIN Confirmation Letter will be sent once you’ve confirmed your application, after which you’ll be able to download and save a copy.

If you choose to file Form SS-4 by mail, the IRS will issue your EIN Confirmation Letter (CP 575) by mail. This takes significantly longer in most cases, depending on the mail processing time.

Important: Remember to store your Confirmation Letter in a safe place once you receive it. I recommend that you file it alongside your other business documents somewhere that you’re familiar with.

If you lose it, forget where it is, or don’t download it online, the IRS will not issue you another letter. You’ll need to request an EIN Verification Letter (147C), which acts as an equal replacement.

How To Contact The Internal Revenue Service (IRS)

  • They can provide help regarding your EIN application, but can’t offer legal or tax advice.

Here is how to speak to a live person:

  1. Press “1” for English.
  2. Press “1” again for employer identification numbers.
  3. Press “3” if you have an EIN, but can’t remember it (This is the only live-person option).
