Note: It’s important to note that Ohio doesn’t issue a general business license. However, depending on your industry and where your LLC operates, you might need specific local or industry-based licenses or permits.

b. Step 2: Get Your Sales Tax License

You’re required to register for a Sales Tax License under O.R.C. § 5739.17(A) in certain specific cases. These include selling, leasing, or renting tangible personal property, or providing taxable services in Ohio.

Ohio offers several types of Sales Tax Licenses depending on your business type. The most common one is the Vendor’s License for in-state businesses, which is granted by the county auditor.

To get the Vendor’s License, three filing methods are available, and these will determine approval times:

  • Online: Immediate approval.
  • By mail: Approval within 4–6 weeks.
  • Filed with the county auditor (mail or walk-in): Typically 1–4 weeks, depending on the county.

Registering online through the Ohio Business Gateway also creates an Ohio ID (OHID), which you can use to access Ohio Tax e-Services. This portal is useful for other types of taxes and business activities in Ohio. For this reason, filing online is suggested for quicker approval and simpler account management. Plus, this way you’ll prevent delays, rejections, or expensive corrections further down the line.

c. Step 3: Register To File And Pay Commercial Activity Tax (CAT)

Any Ohio business that reaches the taxable gross receipts threshold is required to register for and file CAT returns. This applies no matter the industry or entity type, as required by O.R.C. § 5751.02.

Starting with the 2025 tax year, the rules around this tax changed. That said, only businesses with over $6 million in annual taxable gross receipts need to collect and remit CAT.

Registration is completed online through the Ohio Business Gateway and provides an instant CAT account number and confirmation letter. However, it typically takes around three business days before the account is ready to file returns.

  • Federal excise taxes: Applicable to certain services, products, or regulated industries.
  • Self-employment tax: Required for members who currently work or handle the business, based on their share of profits.
