How To Use The Business Name Search In Georgia Tool
The Georgia Corporations Division’s Business Name Search is the state’s official online database. It’s primarily used for looking up business entities registered in the state.
You can see it as a search-based name reference system that shows existing business names, allowing you to assess potential name conflicts before filing your LLC formation documents.
Warning: You can NOT use the tool to confirm if your desired business name will be accepted or rejected.
Access the Georgia Corporations Division: Business Search page to begin your search.
Then follow these steps to fill in the required fields on the Georgia Business Name Search page:
- Select “Business Name” as your search criterion.
- Choose “Contains” as your search type.
- Enter your proposed business name into the search box.
- Click “Search” to view results.
Tip: I recommend using the “Contains” filter when searching, as it returns all possible name variations that include your search terms.
If you use the “Starts With” option, you may miss similar names that include additional words. For example, if you searched for “Sunrise Cleaning” using the “Starts With” filter, you might miss an existing business named “The Sunrise Cleaning LLC.” In that case, you can not register “Sunrise Cleaning LLC” if “The Sunrise Cleaning LLC” exists.

How To Interpret Your Georgia Secretary of State Business Name Search Results
Note: The below interpretations assume that your search was performed using the “Contains” search filter.
The state does NOT label a business name as approved or unavailable when running a name search. This means that you need to interpret the results based on what appears in your list of existing business names.
I’ve discussed the three most common situations below and how to interpret them.
1. Case 1: No Results Appear
If your results show “No data found,” that means that the Georgia Secretary of State database returns no business entities matching your keywords.
This is the best search outcome you can get, which means that your desired LLC name is likely unique and distinguishable based on the results. You should run your search again using only part of your LLC name.
For example, search just the word “Sunrise” instead of “Sunrise Cleaning.”

a. Do You Need A Name Reservation?
2. Case 2: Not Too Similar Results Appear
If your search results show multiple business names that share a similar keyword but are clearly distinguishable from your full business name, your LLC name may still be available.
For example, if your desired LLC name is “Blue Haven Consulting” and the results include “Blue Haven Bargains LLC,” your proposed name would generally be considered available.

3. Case 3: Very Similar Or Nearly Identical Names Appear
If your search results show a business name that closely matches your desired LLC name, the name is not considered distinguishable and will not be accepted by the state.
For example, if searching for “Blue Haven Vacations” returns “Blue Haven Vacations LLC,” you cannot use that name.
Note: If this happens, choose a clearly different name with new core wording. Then, run a new business name search.

How Business Name Status Affects Your Georgia LLC Name
Focus on the Status column when reviewing your search results. Your Georgia business’s status directly dictates whether your name is available to use.

Note: Most statuses show a period where your desired name is “Locked” to protect the original name owner. This may be the case even if they’re not operating.

2. Names That May Be Available

Georgia LLC naming requirements are governed primarily by O.C.G.A. § 14-11-207. The Georgia Rules and Regulations 590-7-20 (Limited Liability Companies – Name) also implement naming standards, guiding how the Secretary of State applies and enforces the requirements.

In addition to the distinguishing requirement, which I will discuss below, these are the core requirements your Georgia LLC name must follow.
1. Character Limit
Your desired LLC name must be 80 characters or fewer. This includes spaces and punctuation. This is very rarely limiting in practice, meaning you don’t really need to worry about it.
To put this into perspective:
- A common LLC name, “Peach State Consulting LLC,” contains 26 characters.
- A lengthy name, “A Long Descriptive Business Name for Consulting Services and Advisory LLC,” contains 73 characters.
2. English Alphabet And Characters
Under Georgia Rules and Regulations (Rule) 590-7-20-.01(d), LLC names must be reproduced using a standard U.S. English keyboard.

With this, your desired LLC name can only include:
- Letters from the English alphabet (A through Z).
- Numbers, including standard Arabic numerals and Roman numerals.
- Standard keyboard symbols (Such as $, #, quotation marks).
If your desired LLC name contains accents, foreign characters, or non-Latin scripts, you’ll need to translate your name into English or rewrite it using English letters.
Examples:
- “Crème Atelier LLC” must be changed to “Creme Atelier LLC” (Without accent marks).
- “München Advisory LLC” must be changed to “Munchen Advisory LLC” (Replacing non-English characters with English equivalents).
3. Designators
Alongside the required state designators, Rule 590-7-20-.01, subsections (a) and (e) specify what must and must not be included in your LLC name

a. Which LLC Designators Are Allowed In Georgia?
b. Prohibited Designators
4. Restricted Words
Under Rule 590-7-20-.06, certain words require prior consent, approval, or additional documentation.
This especially applies to terms referencing:
- Trademarks or trade names.
- Professional organizations.
- Educational institutions.
- Government agencies.
- Charitable organizations.

You face additional scrutiny and may need to provide consent or supporting documentation if your name includes regulated or recognized terms. This must be completed before being approved.
For example, names such as “Georgia Revenue Services LLC,” “Architect Group LLC,” “Red Cross Outreach LLC,” and “Harvard Prep LLC” may require additional review.
Rules On Your Georgia LLC Name Distinguishability
The Georgia Rule 590-7-20-.04 article sets out Georgia’s distinguishability standards. This shows what differences do NOT make a business name unique.

a. Articles
b. Pluralization And Possession
c. Phonetic Variations
d. Connectors And Linking Words
e. Abbreviation Versus Full Word
f. Suffixes And Word Variations
g. Punctuation, Symbols, And Spacing
h. Word Substitutions Using Symbols
i. Numbers Written As Words Or Numerals
j. Words Indicating Business Or Organizational Status
What If My Georgia LLC Name Is Rejected?
If you file your Georgia Articles of Organization and the proposed LLC name is unavailable, the Georgia Secretary of State will reject the filing and issue a notice explaining the reason for rejection.
You can resubmit your Articles of Organization with the corrected LLC name under Rule 590-7-21-.04.
- The Secretary of State will preserve your original filing date if you correct and resubmit your filing within 30 days.
- Your filing is treated as “abandoned” if you don’t refile within 60 days. In this case, you must resubmit your filing and pay a new fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
You can use the Georgia Secretary of State Business Search tool to check if your desired LLC name is available. Use the “Contains” filter to identify existing state business names that may be seen as “confusingly similar.”
Then, carefully review your results, including the “status” column. This is because the state does NOT label names as approved or unavailable. Your final approval only happens once you’ve successfully filed your Articles of Organization.
Your Georgia LLC name must comply with O.C.G.A. § 14-11-207 and the state’s administrative rules.
Your desired LLC name must:

2. Be unique and distinguishable from existing state business names.
3. Use characters allowed under the state rules (Numbers, standard keyboard symbols, and the English alphabet).
4. Not use restricted or prohibited words without approval or required documentation.
