Why Do You Need To Obtain Your Kansas Business Licenses?
Your Kansas LLC faces multiple penalties at the local and state levels if you attempt to operate without the required licenses or fail to renew them on time.
1. State-Level Penalties

Example: The Kansas Secretary of State may impose a civil penalty of up to $1,000 per day per violation, with a maximum assessment of $10,000 if a violation poses serious physical harm to a resident. This is stated under K.S.A. 39-965.

2. Local-Level Penalties
You must obtain a business license from your local agency if you operate in certain localities.
Example: Under the Liberal Ordinance 4371, you face several penalties if you operate an unlicensed business in Liberal City. In this case, you have 30 days to correct your violation. If you can’t fix the issue in 30 days, you may face penalties. You face a new violation that applies to every 30-day period that your LLC continues operating without a license.
Criminal penalties:
- First conviction: $50 fine.
- Second conviction: $100–$500 fine.
- Third or later conviction: $250–$500 fine.
Civil penalties:
- Your LLC faces civil penalties in the amounts listed above.
- You are NOT seen as paying the required tax or fees if you pay a fine or serve the required jail time.
- You may face civil action to collect your unpaid fees, taxes, interest, and penalties.
Alongside this, the city may impose further legal actions. These are designed to stop or correct ordinance violations. Examples include criminal, civil, or equitable actions.

Does Your LLC Need A Federal Business License?
In most cases, Kansas LLCs operating in the state do NOT need to obtain a federal business license or permit. However, you may need one if you operate in a federally regulated industry.
