The Arkansas Business Entity Search Tool allows you to search for your desired business name in the state database. It checks your proposed business name against all registered state entities, so you can determine if it is unique and distinguishable according to state requirements.

Perform your business name search before filing your LLC formation document or reserving your name. This ensures that you:

  • Avoid name conflicts and potential rejections.
  • Verify that your desired name meets Arkansas’s legal naming standards.
  • Save time and money by confirming your name eligibility early on in your formation process.

Using The Arkansas Business Entity Name Database

The Business Entity Search tool allows you to verify if your desired LLC name is available and ready to use. It’s an online tool provided by the Arkansas Secretary of State.

Running a business name search compares your desired business name with existing names already operating in the state. It’s completely free to use and easy to navigate.

Note: I highly recommend that you perform an online Arkansas LLC name search before filing your Articles of Organization with the Arkansas Secretary of State.

Use my steps below to ensure your name is unique and available to use.

1. Search For Your Desired Name In The “Name” Field

  1. Navigate to the “Arkansas Business Entity Search page” on the Secretary of State’s website.
  2. Type your desired LLC name in the “Enter either name” field.
  3. Choose “All types” in the Corporation type dropdown box. You must choose this as your desired name must be unique from all types of business entities.
  4. Choose “Any states” or “Arkansas” in the RA State dropdown box. Both options show all registered entities in Arkansas.
    Click “Search.”

The next page should display a list of business names that contain or closely match your desired name. Once you have this, you’ll need to review your results.

Tips when running your LLC name search in Arkansas:

  • You’ll get more accurate search results if you leave out endings such as “LLC,” “L.L.C.,” or “Limited Liability Company.”
  • You can use uppercase or lowercase letters.
  • Avoid using punctuation to get a complete search result (Commas, periods, apostrophes, etc).
  • Enter the main words only to start. Then, search again using one word.

2. Check Your Result(s)

  1. Review the list of existing business names carefully to see which ones match or are similar to your desired business name.
  2. You should see the name, city, state, and business status.
  3. Ensure you scroll down to see all search results.

Once you’ve reviewed the results, you need to learn how to interpret them. I’ve explained this in the section below.

3. Search Your Desired Name In The “Fictitious Name” Field

a. Search In The Fictitious Field

After running a normal search, you must search for your desired business name in the “Fictitious name” field.

  1. Navigate to the Arkansas Business Entity Search main page.
  2. Enter your desired name in the “Or fictitious name” field.
  3. Choose “All types” for the Corporation type field. Your LLC name must be distinguishable from any other fictitious name.
  4. Select “Any states” or “Arkansas” in the RA State dropdown menu. Both options show Arkansas fictitious names.
  5. Click “Search.”

Why this step matters: Your desired LLC name must be unique compared with official AND fictitious names. Many existing Arkansas businesses operate using fictitious names or trade names different from their official name. If you skip this step, your formation application could be rejected.

b. Click On Each Result Name

After performing your initial search, you need to check each result to see if it’s too similar or identical to your desired business name. Here’s what to do:

  1. Click each entity name to open its record. Review the detailed information (Legal name, filing number, linked names, DBAs).
  2. Compare your desired business name to each fictitious name to see whether it’s unique and distinguishable.
  3. Note any similar names found. This can help when modifying your desired name later on.

Important: You’ll need to repeat this process several times if you find many results. However, most fictitious name lists are shorter than normal entity lists. Therefore, this step shouldn’t take too much time to complete.

Example: Your desired LLC name is “Alice Bakery LLC.”

  • The fictitious name “Alice’s Bakery” appears in the results.
  • Your name is not available as it’s considered too similar by the state of Arkansas.

Interpreting The Name Search Result

Once you’ve completed both searches (The regular name search and the fictitious name search), you must interpret the results. This allows you to determine if your desired LLC name is available to register in the state.

I’ve provided some examples below that apply to both search types. Understanding them helps you know how to proceed, whether to adjust your name or if you need to start over.

1. Names That Are Not Too Similar

Your desired LLC name is considered distinguishable and available to use if the results return names that are not too similar to your desired one.

Not too similar
Not too similar. Photo: Erik Pham.

Example: Your desired name is “Alice Bakery LLC”

  • Your results show “ALICE ENTERPRISES, LLC” and “ALICE WARD GREENE, P.A.”
  • Your name is unique and available.

Tip: You can have words in common with other business names if your name looks obviously different and won’t confuse Arkansas customers.

2. No Results

Your name is most likely available to register if your search returns no results.

No results

However, I would always advise that you double-check just in case. Similar names sometimes don’t appear in your first search due to different spacing, abbreviations, or punctuation. In this case, you should run an additional check to confirm that no similar names exist.

What to do next:

  1. Search again using part of your LLC name.
  2. Use the regular Name field and the Fictitious Name field.
  3. You can proceed with your filing if there are still no matches.

3. Your Exact LLC Name Appears

Your desired business name is not available if your exact business name already appears in the search results. This means that an existing Arkansas business is using that name. Therefore, the Secretary of State will reject your filing.

What to do next:

  1. Change the core words in your business name to create a new variation, not just the designator (Ending).
  2. Confirm your new variation is available by running a new search.
  3. Don’t make minor changes to punctuation. Examples include adding “the” or changing from singular to plural. This won’t create distinguishability.
Your exact LLC name appears
Your exact LLC name appears. Photo: Erik Pham.

Example: Your desired name is “Alice Enterprises, LLC.”

  • You find an exact match in your results list, so you cannot use that name.
  • Create a new name that is distinguishable.
  • Instead, you use “Alice Creative Ventures LLC” or “Alice Enterprise Group LLC.”

Note: Don’t waste valuable time trying to use business names that already appear in your search results. Small edits such as “Alice Enterprises Co.” or “Alice Enterprise LLC” will be rejected under Arkansas’s name-availability rules.

4. A Name Very Similar To Yours

Your name may not be available for registration if your search results show a name that is very similar to your desired LLC name.

A very similar name appears
A very similar name appears. Photo: Erik Pham.

Example: Your desired name is “Alice Lightle.”

  • Your search results show “ALICE F. LIGHTLE, PLLC.”
  • Your name is not available according to the Arkansas Naming Rules.

The state of Arkansas treats both names as the same, even though one includes a middle initial and a different business designator (PLLC vs. LLC). These names are seen as nearly identical, even with added words, abbreviations, and spelling changes.

What to do next:

  1. Review your similar name. This allows you to see the changes you need to make to ensure it’s unique and distinguishable.
  2. Change the meaning, structure, or keywords to make your name unique. This is now your new business name.
  3. Run another Business Name Search using your updated business name.

Note: Your desired name will still be seen as too similar if the only differences are in punctuation, plural words, and punctuation.

Tip: Your name is unavailable if an existing state business name looks almost identical. The state of Arkansas ignores differences in initials, plural word forms, and punctuation when determining if a name is distinguishable.

Do You Need To Reserve Your Business Name?

You do NOT need to reserve your desired LLC name before filing your Arkansas Articles of Organization. However, you can make a name reservation if you need more time to prepare your formation documents and don’t want anyone to use your desired name.

How to reserve your business name (Optional):

  1. Navigate to the Arkansas Secretary of State’s Online Filing System and submit your reservation online. Alternatively, complete the Name Reservation Form (RN-06) and mail the paper version.
  2. Pay the required filing fees to secure your name reservation.
  3. Your name is reserved for up to 120 days once approved.

The state of Arkansas will automatically check your name availability when you file your Articles of Organization. Therefore, it’s smart to reserve your desired name if you don’t want to file immediately, even though a reservation isn’t required.

Tip: Reserving your business name is a smart way to protect it before your official LLC registration. You should do it if you’re waiting on other paperwork or still finalizing your business plan.

How To Avoid Name Rejections

Apply exclusive ZenBusiness promo code to get an LLC for $0 + state fee.

Avoid name rejection and get your LLC started WITHOUT paying upfront.

You must make sure that your desired business name follows the state naming rules and regulations before filing your Arkansas LLC formation documents. Under the Arkansas Limited Liability Company Act (§ 4-38-112), your name will be rejected by the Arkansas Secretary of State if it doesn’t comply.

Arkansas Limited Liability Company Act (§ 4-38-112)
Arkansas Limited Liability Company Act (§ 4-38-112). Photo: Erik Pham.

I’ve discussed the key requirements below to ensure a smooth LLC formation process. You’ll learn how to avoid name rejections and potentially costly delays.

1. Using Commas In Your LLC Name

You’re not required to use a comma before “LLC” in your Arkansas business name. Both formats will be accepted by the Arkansas Secretary of State.

Note: This is a stylistic choice rather than a firm legal rule. The name’s meaning and legal standing are seen as the same by the state.

2. What Designators (Endings) Are Allowed?

All Arkansas LLCs must use an approved designator at the end of their business name under Arkansas Code § 4-38-112. This identifies your business as an LLC.

The following designators are allowed:

  • LLC.
  • Limited Liability Company.
  • L.L.C.
  • LC.
  • Limited Company.
  • L.C.
  • Ltd.

Your desired business name must include one of the following if you’re forming a Professional LLC (PLLC):

  • Professional Limited Liability Company.
  • PLLC.
  • P.L.L.C.

Example: The standard LLC name “Blue Sky Ventures LLC” would become “Blue Sky Dental PLLC.”

3. Restricted Designators

Some designers can only be used by other types of business entities. Your formation filing will be rejected by the Arkansas Secretary of State for misrepresenting your business structure.

You cannot use these restricted designators:

  • “Inc.” or “Incorporated” are reserved for Corporations.
  • “Corp.” or “Corporation” are reserved for Corporations.
  • “Ltd. Partnership,” “LP,” “LLP,” or “LLLP” are reserved for Partnerships.
  • “Nonprofit” and “Foundation” are for Charitable Organizations (unless your business is registered as one).

Examples:

  • “Blue Sky Ventures Inc.” would be rejected because the name is misleading, as it’s not a corporation.
  • “Blue Sky Ventures LLC.” is correct and compliant according to state naming rules.

4. Restricted Words

The state restricts certain words to protect the public and prevent confusion with regulated industries. Furthermore, some words are prohibited unless you obtain written approval from the appropriate state agency, board, or commission.

I’ve given some examples in the summary table below.

Restricted wordRequires approval from
Bank, Trust, or Bank & TrustArkansas State Bank Department
Engineer, Engineering, or any variationState Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers & Surveyors
Razorback(s) or Arkansas RazorbacksUniversity of Arkansas System
Insurance or similar industry termsArkansas Insurance Department
Medical or Dental referencesArkansas State Medical Board or Arkansas State Dental Board
Restricted words and required approvals. Source: Erik Pham

You must get an approval letter from the relevant agency or department before your filing can be accepted if your desired name contains one of these words.

Avoid using:

  • Inappropriate or vulgar language.
  • Deceptive or misleading words.
  • Names that are confusingly similar to existing registered or trademarked names.

Examples:

  • “Arkansas Razorback Roofing LLC” needs approval from the University of Arkansas.
  • “Elite Bank Solutions LLC” needs approval from the State Bank Department.
  • “Elite Roofing Solutions LLC” will be accepted as it is fully compliant according to the state’s naming rules.

Tip: Use neutral, descriptive words if you’re not sure what to do. Do not use words associated with financial authorities, universities, or professional organizations, unless legally authorized to use them.

How To Make Your Name Unique: A Step-By-Step Guide

Checking that your desired business name is available is only the first step. Next, you must make sure that it follows Arkansas business naming rules.

Your desired business name will be rejected by the Arkansas Secretary of State if it isn’t unique from existing state business names.

However, it also needs to follow the main Arkansas business naming rules and regulations. I’ve outlined the key rules below, including examples to ensure you create a compliant LLC name.

You can review the Arkansas Secretary of State Name Availability Guidelines for a full list of what does and doesn’t make a name unique.

Arkansas Name Availability Guidelines. Source: Arkansas Secretary Of State

1. Don’t Change Designators To Create Distinguishability

Changing designators does NOT create distinguishability. Example endings include “LLC,” “Inc.,” or “Co.” The Arkansas Secretary of State will ignore these designators when checking for distinguishability.

Example: “Central Broadcasting Companyand Central Broadcasting Company Inc” are treated as identical under Arkansas law. In this case, your filing would be rejected.

2. Non-Meaningful Or Filler Words Won’t Create Distinguishability

Using short or common words will NOT make your Arkansas business name unique. Examples include “the,” “a,” “an,” “and,” “&,” “of,” “or,” “by,” and “for.” These words will be ignored by the Arkansas Secretary of State when reviewing whether your name meets state requirements.

Example: “The Toy Store LLC andToy Store LLC” are treated as the same. Therefore, your filing would be rejected if another business already uses that name.

Instead, choose words that change the name’s meaning or make it stand out. For example, focus on a unique product, service, or location that sets your business apart.

Examples:

  • Change “The Green House LLC” to “Green House Gardening LLC.”
  • Change “A+ Auto Works LLC” to “A1 Premier Auto Works LLC.”

3. Adding The Word “Arkansas” Or The Abbreviations Won’t Create Distinguishability

You cannot make your business name unique by adding “Arkansas,” “AR,” or “Ark.” These geographical identifiers are not treated as distinguishable by the Arkansas Secretary of State. If you try using these to create distinguishability, your filing will be rejected.

Example: “Outdoor Landscaping LLC” and “Arkansas Outdoor Landscaping LLC” are considered the same in Arkansas’s business records.

Instead, choose words that add genuine distinction. For example, focus on your business speciality and unique brand image.

Example: Instead of “Arkansas Riverfront Cleaning LLC”

Use:

  • “Riverfront Cleaning & Maintenance LLC”
  • “Riverfront Eco Cleaning Services LLC”
  • “Riverfront Premier Cleaning Group LLC”

4. Adding The Words “America” And Similar Words Might Not Create Distinguishability

You usually cannot make your name unique and distinguishable in Arkansas by using generic or broad words. Examples include “America,” “American,” “US,” “USA,” “National,” or “International.”

These words do not change your business name identity according to the Arkansas Secretary of State.

Example:

  • “Elite Roofing LLC” is classified the same as “American Elite Roofing LLC.”
  • “Global Tech Solutions LLC” is classified the same as “International Global Tech Solutions LLC.”

Instead, use distinctive words that describe your company’s product or focus area. This should give your name a real meaning.

Instead of using “American Prime Logistics LLC”

Use:

  • “Prime Logistics & Freight Solutions LLC”
  • “Prime Logistics Distribution Group LLC”
  • “Prime Logistics Regional Transport LLC”

5. Don’t Use The Same Word Written Differently

Changing the grammar, spelling, or abbreviations won’t create distinguishability. Names that have the same root meaning or sound the same are considered identical by the Arkansas Secretary of State.

a. Unique Spelling

Your name will not be unique and distinguishable if you use creative or unusual spellings. They’ll be treated the same under Arkansas naming rules if they sound alike when spoken.

Examples of changes that would not be approved:

  • “Quick Stop LLC” to “Kwick Stop LLC”
  • “Phantom Fitness LLC” to “Fantum Fitness LLC”

While these names have clear spelling differences, they’re treated as “phonetically identical” by the state. Therefore, your filing would be rejected.

b. Variations Of The Same Word

You cannot make your name distinguishable by using possessive, plural, or slightly modified word forms. The state of Arkansas will treat them as the same word family.

Examples of word changes that would not be approved:

  • “Design in Mind LLC” to “Designs in Mind LLC”
  • “Little Rock Electric Services LLC” to “Little Rock’s Electric Services LLC”
  • “Magic Professional LLC” to “Magical Professional LLC”

These variations are too similar and are not considered “distinguishable.”

6. Adding Numbers Or Variations Of Numbers

Adding numbers or variations of numbers (Digits or spelled-out words) does NOT create distinguishability in Arkansas. The state only considers a number to be distinguishable if it’s directly tied to your company as an identifier or if it changes the meaning of your business name.

a. Numerals Or Numbers

Putting numbers before or after business names won’t create distinguishability. Examples include “1,” “2,” or “3.” Your desired business name will still be treated as identical by the Secretary of State, unless they change the name’s significance or context.

Examples of word changes that would not be approved:

  • “Soul Food LLC” to “Soul Food 2 LLC”
  • “A1 Plumbing LLC” to “A-1 Plumbing LLC”

These name variations are viewed as the same by the state (Unless one has a specific, verifiable purpose).

b. Adding Numbers When It Might Be Allowed

Adding numbers can create distinguishability, but only in certain situations recognized by the state.

If you’re the same owner of an additional company, you can use a number to identify your related one. However, you’ll need a Letter of Affiliation when you file.

For example, if you already own “Soul Food LLC,” you can use “Soul Food 2 LLC” if you can provide a letter of affiliation showing you own both companies.

Your name may be accepted if the additional number reflects your business address and matches your official formation documents.

For instance, the name “9800 University LLC” may be accepted. This is because the number matches the company’s street address listed in its Articles of Organization.

Numbers that change the meaning of a name can make it distinguishable. Examples include indicating a ranking, sequence, or a distinct phrase.

For example, the name “Second Baptist Church LLC” is distinguishable from “First Baptist Church LLC.” This is because the numbers change the meaning and identity.

Tip: I recommend that you only use numbers that add genuine meaning to your business name. Good examples include part of your business address, your brand identity, or sequence. You won’t create distinguishability by adding random numbers.

1. Enter your desired business name in the “Name” field.
2. Select “All Types” for the Corporation Type field.

Your name is likely not available if similar ones appear in the search results. Make sure you check for regular names and fictitious names to make sure no existing Arkansas businesses are using them.

How to search for a name for a business?

Use the Arkansas Business Entity Search tool provided by the Secretary of State to search for existing state business names. Make sure to omit words such as “LLC,” punctuation, and articles such as “the” or “a” to get broader results when searching.

How to find out if a company name is already registered?

Enter your desired business name into the Arkansas Business Entity Search tool to find out if a company name is already registered in the state. An Arkansas business is already using your business name if the exact name or a similar name appears in your search results.

Are LLC names public record?

All LLC names and business entities registered with the Arkansas Secretary of State are part of the public record. This means that anyone can search for them using the online Business Entity Search tool. This helps prevent potential name duplication and maintain accountability.

How do I register my business name so no one can use it?

The two main ways to secure your desired business name are to file your Articles of Organization with the Secretary of State or reserve your business name. To make a reservation, file a Name Reservation Form (RN-06) online or by mail. Your name will be reserved for 120 days once approved. Once your LLC is approved, your desired name is legally protected and cannot be used by other Arkansas business entities.

What names to avoid for an LLC?

Use meaningful, descriptive words that reflect your service offered or brand image. Do NOT use restricted terms or filler words that could delay or block your LLC registration process. Use the Arkansas Code § 4-38-112 and the Name Availability Guidelines to avoid names that could cause your LLC filing to be rejected.
