UK: Next day delivery option outpaces economy

August saw more orders requiring next day delivery than economy delivery, according to new data from the latest IMRG MetaPack UK Delivery Index.

Online retail order growth in the UK was up 18.2% YoY in August, according to the Index, and there were more orders requiring next day delivery than economy delivery for the first time.

The percentage of orders selecting next day delivery was 36.7% while those using the economy delivery option was slightly less at 33.8%.

There are a number of factors that may be influencing consumers' choice in delivery time, says Andrew Starkey, head of e-logistics at IMRG. Firstly, many retailers are offering next day delivery as standard in order to stand out from the crowd and attract more sales. Secondly, increasing numbers of retailers are offering next day delivery for orders over a certain value. Finally, the cost of next day delivery is less than it has been in previous years.

"A move toward faster delivery is not unexpected and, for carriers, it doesn't represent a capacity issue during most of the year - but during peaks such as the Black Friday period, promotion of next day delivery should be handled more cautiously," warns Starkey.

Recent research among European online shoppers by JDA and Centiro has found that many are prepared to up the value of goods they purchase with a retailer to qualify for free delivery.
