By 2020, DFC Intelligence forecasts that game software revenues will reach $42 billion as today's moderate gamers gain more disposable income.

Last year, the global PC gaming market hit an all time high with a record $30 billion in revenues, up 11% on the previous year. According to DFC Intelligence, this was driven by a combination of retail sales, subscriptions, virtual item sales, advertising and digital distribution revenue".

By 2020, revenues are forecast to reach $42 billion. DFC's report says that the main drivers of PC games are "core and moderate PC gamers" and that the market's growth will depend largely on today's moderate PC gamers becoming core gamers as their disposable income increases and they increase their spending on both software and hardware.

DFC estimates there are around 300 million core and moderate PC gamers globally that are driving growth with the biggest source of growth being China, with $12 billion in revenue in 2015 followed by the US )$4.2 billion), and South Korea ($2 billion).

Virtual reality will play a major role, particularly for high-end PC game growth. According to David Cole, CEO of DFC Intelligence, "The demand for high performance hardware that can power cutting edge game content has already started to accelerate substantially, as consumers want to have a system able to play the latest content."
