That, after a strong 2015. According to the survey more than 60% of SMBs say they increased revenue between 2014 and 2015, while 48% say they met their Q1 2016 revenue goals.

"Today's small business owner is a realist, a calculated risk taker, and a fast learner," said John Orlando, chief marketing officer at Constant Contact. "They understand today's business climate and what elements are in their control, and are increasing their reliance on online marketing as they take measured steps to achieve their business goals."

Although revenue lines are up, SMBs aren't rushing to hire more employees. About half of those surveyed say they have no plans to increase staff in 2016 and 17% say they'll only hire part-timers this year.

As to how SMBs plan to continue improving their business: continued education. Most of those surveyed say they spend at least 10 hours each month to learning new things. Social Media, Facebook and SEO are three topics that top the list of continuing education topics for small business owners.
