eSports now has its own governing body

We have covered eSports over the last few weeks and how it is growing into a major source of entertainment and competition for gaming fans the world over. News this week is that a World eSports Association has now been created.

In the words of Electronic Sports League (ESL) MD, Ralf Reichart, this week sees a "critical milestone on our way to grow eSports globally". That is because eight professional gaming teams (Faze, Fnatic, EnVyUs, G2 Esports, Faze, Mousesports, Natus Vincere, Ninjas in Pyjamas, and Virtus.Pro) have teamed up with ESL to create the World Esports Association (WESA).

"WESA offers many opportunities to the Member Teams and their Players, but we're most excited about the esports's first official player representative finally becoming a reality", added Wiktor "TaZ" Wojtas, from Team Virtus.Pro.

Until the formation of WESA, the world of eSports lacked standardisation. Different companies ran competitions for various games, some team-based, some solo, ad with different agreements for the teams who enter. And those teams also differ in how they treat their members. However, the formation of WESA means they can work with professional teams to standardize player contracts, set tournament schedules, advise teams on distribution rights agreements and provide arbitration between e-sports players and their teams.

"It's an incredibly exciting time to be a part of the esports industry, and its rapid growth in just a few years has made it very clear: there's growing and more pressing need to structurize it, both on the tournament organizer's side as well as on the players' side," says Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund of Ninjas in Pyjamas. "WESA will offer us a platform to do just that - organize our work and careers, build a network of safety, and offer a solution to business and legal disputes."
