Study: Gamers not confident about developer security

Hey, developers, gamers like your games, but they aren't confident you'll keep them safe. That is the takeaway from new PlayFab data. While online and mobile gaming has grown by leaps and bounds for the past five years, their research shows most (83%) of gamers believe developers should be responsible for keeping their data safe.

Conversely, fewer than half (40%) say they are confident in game developers' ability to actually keep their data safe. More than three-quarters (86%) also said they are concerned about the security of their data in the overall online space, not just the gaming space.

"Data breaches continue to plague businesses across the globe, and the games industry is not immune to these attacks," said James Gwertzman, co-founder and CEO of PlayFab. "These survey results underscore both the opportunity for game developers to improve trust by focusing on security measures, and the importance that they do so to safeguard an audience that relies on them. PlayFab plays a role in this by giving developers a battle-tested, secure backend that makes it easier to protect players' private data."

Other interesting findings from the report include:

• 46% say they give developers 'the bare minimum' personal data to play games
• 20% say they sometimes falsify information because of security concerns
• 60% say cost and in-game experience as the most important factors in the games they play
• 55% believe desktop/laptop gaming is more secure than other platforms
• 30% say they are aware of gaming data breaches
• 85% report they 'have not been affected' by gaming data breaches

Most gamers surveyed (71%) also said they have never stopped playing a game because they were concerned with security.
