Mobile just the ticket: By 2019 1 in 2 tickets will be purchased with mobile

Within the next five years, 1 in 2 digital ticketing transactions will be via mobile, according to a new forecast released by Juniper Research.

In its latest report, 'Mobile & Online Ticketing: Transport, Events and NFC 2015-2019', Juniper forecasts global ticket purchases via desktop and mobile (tablets, PCs and smartphones) will reach 32 billion by 2019, up from an estimated 16.2 billion in 2015 - a two-fold growth over the next four years.

Furthermore, Juniper predicts that mobile handsets will account for more than 1 in 2 digital tickets purchased by 2019. Currently, metro/bus travel is the dominant mobile ticketing sector due to its low price, high frequency and high volume nature which makes it suited for mobile payments.

Airlines will also play a key role with 1 in 3 boarding passes forecast to be issued via mobile by 2019. More than half of airlines currently issue mobile boarding passes via apps, according to recent figures from SITA(Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques) and, within the next two years, nearly all (91%) will do so.

Juniper's research also suggests that ticketing apps will find a key role in wearable devices such as smartwatches. According to Nitin Bhas, author of the research, "Smartwatches with NFC capability offer a convenient replacement for contactless debit-cards and smartphones. Integrating new devices and wearables should be a key strategic directive for all players across the ticketing value chain".
