Study: Connected device security top consumers' concerns

Americans are more and more connected to their smartphones, tablets and smart television sets, but that connection also comes with worry. According to one new study privacy and security tops the list of consumer concerns about connected devices.

Restlet surveyed consumers about their devices and found that 80% believe connected devices 'improve their quality of life'; nearly 90% also say safety and privacy top their concerns about the same devices.

"The US population is proving very mature in their relationship to connected objects. Using multiple devices and applications to access services and information, they express a need to be connected frequently and do not hesitate to use the device that is the best fit for their purpose," said Jerome Louvel, chief geek and founder of Restlet. "This need for connectivity requires a secure and reliable infrastructure that addresses the main concerns indicated by respondents of our survey: safety and privacy of data, and efficient synchronicity of information through all channels. Web APIs provide a robust foundation for building systems that guarantee instant access to all systems and applications."

Other interesting findings from the report include:

• 52% report they use 2 or more devices daily, 20% say they use 4 or more devices
• 51% say they need to connect with their favored apps and services multiple times each day
• 30% say they 'are extremely concerned' about the safety and privacy of their devices

Meanwhile most (83%) say they aren't sure their service providers or call centers can actually access the data they've already entered online.
