Google Glass withdrawn from sale but watch this space

Google's decision to pull Glass from sale has sparked many an ode to failed technology but they may be premature as another version is already in development.

The long-awaited consumer launch of Google Glass has been put on hold while the development team switch from the research division and head on over to Nest, acquired by Google a year ago, and begin to integrate what they've learned from the current model into Google Glass 2.

An announcement on Glass's Google+ page says sales of the smart glasses to individuals through the Explorer program will cease as of January 19. However, Google will continue to supports its Glass at Work initiative.

Google first made Glass available to individuals through its Explorer program in 2013 with a larger public release in 2014. Since then, Google has faced questions about privacy and the best use of Glass, questions that will no doubt be addressed in the development of Google Glass 2.

While Glass is a big step forward in personal tech, several aspects of it have worried consumers. Research by Toluna in the UK found that safety concerns put a lot of people off wearing Google Glass in public. Almost half (46%) of 1,000 respondents to Toluna's survey said they feared being mugged for their wearable technology.

Another survey in the UK, this time from LoveMyVouchers, found that more than two-thirds (68%) of 1,132 consumers surveyed would be too embarrassed to wear Google Glass in public and 64% would feel uncomfortable talking to someone who was sporting a pair. Furthermore, privacy was a consideration with 71% citing concern for such activities as being filmed without their permission.

Such were the concerns that Google published guidance on Glass etiquette, or 'how not to be a glass-hole'.
