For many in business, the Internet of Things is something they have only recently heard of but, according to recent research by Zebra Technologies, the vast majority of retail decision makers are already on the case for integration.

A whopping 96% of the 600 companies surveyed by Forrester Consulting for Zebra Technologies said they are ready to make the necessary changes to adopt Internet of Things solutions.

In fact, more than three quarters of the participating IT and business decision makers said they have already deployed some form of Internet of Things solutions and 26% have plans to deploy such technology in the coming year.

And, according to Zebra Technologies' findings, retailers have a clear vision of what they need for Internet of Things. Real-time locating systems (RTLS), mobile computing and bar-coding were listed as the most important enabling technologies while data analytics, security and sensor devices were identified as "required" implementations.

However, 56% have concerns about integration and 47% cited security and privacy as chief worries.

"The advent of new technologies has completely changed the way shoppers interact with retailers, but the shopping experience can be the retailer's strategic differentiator," says Nick D'Alessio, global retail practice leader of Zebra Technologies. "With the Internet of Things, retailers will be empowered with the intelligence to make strategic, informed business decisions that improve customer loyalty and associate effectiveness while creating exciting experiences for their shoppers."
