Foursquare now offers 'self-serve' option for businesses

Since the beginning of 2010 Foursquare has produced, by hand, over 3,000 Pages for businesses wanting a Page on their platform. But it seems their business development team are to get a well-earned rest as a self-serve option is introduced this week.

foursquare_logo1.pngThe timing is good. Recent research has found that Foursquare, along with YouTube and LinkedIn, is attracting more and more interest from marketers who have already found success with Facebook and Twitter and who are looking to test other platforms.

According to Foursquare's announcement, "any brand, organization, or publication can now create their own Page, gain followers, share Tips, check in, and reach their fans". The new tool also allows for multiple managers allowing entire teams of people to manage the same Page.

"We're seeing 70 new brand page sign-ups a week with the old system," said Foursquare's product manager, Noah Weiss (via Ad Age). "When we launch this, anyone will be able to create a brand page that can be followed."

A survey in the UK by youth communication agency Dubit revealed that awareness of Foursquare in the UK among teens is low. Facebook Places is the service most British teens recognize and use, not surprising given half the UK population has a Facebook account. Almost half (44%) had heard of Facebook Places whereas just 27% had heard of Foursquare.
