Survey: 37% of teens aspire to own Apple gadgets

Smartphones are becoming the latest "must have" teen gadget. Apple's "cool" factor is driving popularity of the iPhone and iPad among teenagers, according to a new survey from Piper Jaffray.

iphone-logo.jpgA survey of 4,500 high school students in the U.S. revealed a penchant for Apple products. Ownership among teens is rising. Whereas six months ago 14% of teens owned an iPhone, that figure has now risen to 17%.

Those that don't already have an iPhone intend to buy one. Thirty-seven percent said they plan to purchase an iPhone in the next six months, an all-time high, according to Piper Jaffray.

However, it should be noted that the survey did not ask whether the teens would be buying these gadgets themselves, or begging their parents for one.

Over one fifth, 22%, owned a tablet, and 20% planned on buying one in the next six months. While that particular survey question wasn't specific to Apple, it's probably safe to say a large portion of those figures relate to the iPad.

It will be interesting to see whether teen aspirations are realized with regards to Apple products. Current smartphone market forecasts put Android firmly as market leader for the next few years, will today's teens' passion for Apple change the landscape?
