Today, more than half (51%) of Americans over the age of 12 have a profile on Facebook, found the joint study from Arbitron and Edison Research.

Three years ago just 8% of the U.S. population were signed up with the social network.

The figures are taken from a new study, “Dial 2011: Navigating Digital Platforms” by Arbitron and Edison Research that is due for official release next month, along with a free webinar. Among other things the study delves into the reasons behind Facebook’s incredible rise in popularity.

At the beginning of March, Facebook VP of Europe, Joanna Shields, announced to attendees of the Financial Times Digital Media and Broadcasting Conference that the total number of users in the UK had reached just over 30 million – half the country’s population.
