Half of UK now Facebook users

Europeans are logging on to Facebook in increasing numbers. Over half the population of the UK now uses Facebook and the total number of users on the social networking site is nearing 600 million.

Mark Zuckerberg's prediction that 1 billion people worldwide would eventually be using his site is slowly coming true. Official figures put the number of global users at around 500 million, but reports say it could be nearing 600 million.

Over the past eight months, the number of users in the UK alone has risen by 4 million. The total number of users in the UK now stands at just over 30 million, half the population.

The figures were announced by Facebook VP of Europe Joanna Shields at the Financial Times Digital Media and Broadcasting Conference this week.

Shields also pointed out the success that companies who integrate Facebook functionality, such as "Share" and "Like" buttons, have enjoyed.

It's not just Brits that are mad for social networking. Facebook is popular in other European countries, too. France boasts 20 million users and Italy 16 million.
