Which electronics hold the most appeal for consumers

The Christmas holiday is just three days away and many etailers are wrapping up - no pun intended - the 2010 holiday season. But, don't move so quickly to get beyond Christmas and into 2011. According to one report, consumer electronics are hot tickets this season, but many kids and adults won't have electronics to open Christmas morning.

For many, this will mean a trip to the mall or online store after the holidays are over and that means another chance for etailers to make a profit. The key for etailers, of course, is knowing which gifting ideas have been left undone; knowing this may help in the slow January/February months ahead. What's hot this year?

According to a recent Nielsen Company poll, consumer electronics are the must-have on most Christmas lists this year, with most kids - even grown-up kids - wishing for Apple's iPad, new computers or even game systems like Nintendo's DS unit.

The poll found interest in electronics such as:

• iPad (18%)
• New computer (20%)
• iPod Touch (11%)
• Non-iPhone Smartphone (19%)
• iPhone (13%)
• Nintendo DS (8%) or 3DS (6%)

According to metrics firm comScore, the holiday season to date has brought in more than $27 billion in online sales; the holiday shopping season has also seen several new all-time-high spending days, with more than $1 billion being spent in a single day. Does this mean all of the big ticket items will be under the tree? Not necessarily, which means etailers need to be ready for after-holiday sales and campaigns.

How quickly are these consumers planning to buy - despite recent holiday activity? Within the next six months. So, etailers, now is the time to get those after-Christmas campaigns and deal offerings ready to do.
