Holiday trend: Shopping local, surfing for offers

This holiday season online sellers have had busy check-outs, but more than that, a few new trends have emerged. Consumers are finding products via mobile before entering brick-and-mortar stores, shoppers are price-checking before entering online or offline stores and consumers are surfing for deals.

As in 2009, shopping engines are a big help for consumers during this hectic time of year. But, rather than simply comparing prices via a shopping engine, consumers are actually using some shopping engines to find local stores and businesses. Why? Because local businesses can be hard to find and sometimes that hard-to-find-gift is available in your town and you just don't know it.

The local shopping engine is one new trend this holiday season. Engines such as Goodzer, which launched earlier this year, help consumers find products in their cities. The engine helps shoppers find out which stores still have Item A in stock and through its mobile app can even map a route so that the shopper can easily find a local store.

Another trend? This one isn't so new: it's called The Deal. Consumers always want a good deal and they'll compare prices - sometimes down to the amount of gas required to drive to a specific store - to find that best deal.

For online shoppers, many times The Deal comes in the form of Free Shipping. There is even a day set aside for free shipping - December 17. Yes, that is today. The thing this, many savvy shoppers are finding that they don't need to wait for an 'official' free shipping day. They simply need to find the shipping deal.

'Finding the deal' has more consumers than ever heading for coupon and deal sites like During the 2009 holiday season, estimates that they helped shoppers save an average of $27 per purchase just from free shipping offers. They estimate that millions of dollars were saved over the course of the 2009 holiday season; in 2010, the company expects even more consumers to log on, find their deals and then go shopping.
