Huge rise in mobile barcode scanning

Several big brands have already dipped their toes into the mobile barcode scene, but more will surely follow after the news that more barcode scanning took place in July this year than in the whole of 2009.

According to ScanBuy's inaugural "Mobile Barcode Trend Report", scanning via the company's network is up a whopping 700% since the beginning of 2010. Growth was shown to be fastest in the last three months and the trend looks set to continue into Q4.

"It is important for all of the players in the industry to know that consumers are extremely engaged in this technology, and these are all good signs pointing to long term growth potential," said Mike Wehrs, interim CEO of Scanbuy.

"Intelligent packaging" is becoming increasingly popular, and big CPG firms are catching on. Recently, Pringles' ran its World Cup game campaign in China which engaged 70,000 unique individuals, and last year Heineken ran its successful "Plug Into Summer" barcode campaign.

It is technology like this that can be used to quickly engage with on-the-go consumers. While most codes lead a consumer to a website the possibilities are endless. On-the-spot discounts, in-depth product information while the consumer stands in the aisle or even access to price comparison data - all easily achieved via a simple barcode.
