Half-mil sign on for GamePoints in 30 days

Just one more sign that today's online consumer is gaming: in its first month, has signed up more than a half a million users. The platform beta-launched in May, offering consumers more options to accrue and use online gaming points and moving into one of the top slots for online gaming rewards sites.

Using the platform, online gamers can earn virtual currency to use on favorite gaming sites, including the games within Facebook and MMOs. In exchange the consumers are given 'offers' - targeted advertising or other marketing actions. The most popular ways to earn virtual currency through the hub are watching videos, completing surveys or earning shopping rewards.

" our players a much larger variety of proven and unique ways to earn credit than the current in-game transactional model, as well as a seamless process for redeeming those credits for our own game currency," said Sumit Gupta with BitRhymes, a developer of social games Wild Paradise and Tag Me. "The model allows more of our users to engage more deeply in our games by giving them a place where they can earn credits without interrupting their game play."

According to a recent eMarketer report mobile gamers are expected to increase end-user spending by nearly 20% this year. The end-user spend is predicted to hit $5.6 billion in 2010 and by 2014 to reach just over $11 billion. Why the sharp increases? Mobile apps. As more consumers switch to smartphones, gaming apps are exploding. Consumers are playing online games, app games and social games more each day.

For online gamers, a report from The NPD Group, finds that they are still spending more than half of their online time with games. The Online Gaming 2010 report finds that gamers spend 8 hours weekly playing online games, up just over 1% from 2009 levels.
