CNNIC: China's online population more than total US population

Not only does China have the largest population of all countries on earth, it now also has the largest online population, too, according to the country's government-sanctioned Internet Network Information Center.

Data collated at the end of June this year shows the number of Internet users in China rose 13% in the previous twelve months. The number of Chinese Internet users now stands at 338 million, reports the CNNIC, around 30 million more than the total population of US.

Between January and June this year, the number of Internet users in China rose by approximately 14 million - the population of Ecuador. Even the number of online shoppers in China (88 million) is greater than the total population of the UK (61 million).

According to Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) data, around 90% of China's administrative villages now have Internet and 95% of townships are connected to broadband.

However, only one quarter of the Chinese population have Internet access, compared to around 70% of the US population, demonstrating that the Chinese market still has much room to grow.
