Nielsen: Social networking 4th most popular online activity

If you're not blogging, friending or otherwise socializing as part of your online marketing plan, you're probably missing out. According to a new report from Nielsen Online social networking and blogging are now the fourth most popular online activity. With so many consumers interacting on a social level marketers need to be there, too.

Social networking now accounts for about 10% of consumers' time online.

"Social networking has become a fundamental part of the global online experience," said John Burbank, CEO of Nielsen Online. "While two-thirds of the global online population already accesses member community sites, their vigorous adoption and the migration of time show no signs of slowing. Social networking will continue to alter not just the global online landscape, but the consumer experience at large."

According to the report 67% of consumers are now part of a member community, but perhaps the most important finding is that time spent on a social site is growing three times faster than time spent overall on the Internet.

Here are a few other interests findings:

• 1 in every 11 minutes is accounted for on a social network
• 35-49 year olds are logging on to member communities nearly as often as younger consumers
• Mobile social networking is showing strong growth, especially in the UK
