Although the economy in the US seems to be in the beginning stages of a bounce-back, consumers are still frugally looking for the best deals - especially online shoppers. From special 'deal days' to looking for the best coupons, consumers are scouring the Internet to find good deals and giving etaiilers another chance to engage them and win over new shoppers.

Since February 2008 online couponing has seen a tremendous 120% growth rate, equating to $21 million in additional savings. In February 2009 consumers printed $39 million in savings coupons from many different shopping categories. Which categories are the hottest?

In addition to simply printing more coupons per customer, more customers are logging on. According to Simmons Market Research 40 million consumers are currently printing coupons online, a 20% increase year over year (YoY). Online coupon clippers are also most likely to online use online coupons and are less likely to clip from newspapers or use back-of-receipt coupons.

According to data from the hottest category right now is food with Ready to Eat Cereal, following by Yogurt and Salty Snacks all ranking in the top three positions. Following food items is Personal Care. Consumers are also looking for coupons for Nutrition and Diet, likely as part of the New Year's resolution.
