IAB-Europe: Online European ad spend up 40%

More European advertisers are turning to the Internet to reach the consumer base. That, according to the recent Internet advertising report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau-Europe. According to the report, in 2007 online advertising increased by 40% to reach 11.2 billion Euros.

That is an increase of 4 billion Euros over 2006 spending numbers. For the same reporting period, the US online ad spend increased 26%.

“Despite a slowdown in advertising spend on some traditional media, the rise of online advertising in Europe continues unabated," Alain Heureux, President of IAB Europe said. "Not only is the growth coming from some of the smaller markets which are seeing significant increases in their market value, but also from the more mature countries as companies move their advertising budgets online for the first time.”

About two-thirds of that is spent by businesses in the UK, Germany and France. The highest growth rates, however, were seen in smaller European countries like Greece (91% increase in online ad spending), Spain (55% increase) and Slovenia (49% increase).

As marketers log on to advertise online they are finding European consumers to be open their ads. On average, businesses are spending about 80 Euros per consumer but by comparison, US advertisers spend about 91 Euros per consumer.
