Yahoo! to Enable Instant Messaging in Yahoo! Mail

Yahoo! is to follow its rival Google’s lead by merging its email and instant messaging programs.

by Helen Leggatt

On Thursday a Yahoo! executive announced that Yahoo! Mail and Messenger users will soon be able to use both programs in one web browser. This will negate the need to download and install the Messenger software, a potential barrier to non-technical prospects.

When the user creates and addresses an email in Yahoo! Mail, an icon will appear next to the recipient’s name. This icon indicates whether or not the recipient is online. If that person is online, Yahoo! Mail can then be used like the Messenger service, otherwise Yahoo! Mail can be used.

Future upgrades will also enable Yahoo! users to chat with Microsoft’s Window Live Messenger. The two companies made their two instant messaging applications interoperable in July 2006.

Yahoo! Mail has around 250 million active monthly users.
