Making Sense of Message Archiving Requirements
There are many regulations that cover Message Archiving and the overall category of Electronic Media. While many businesses feel they are not required to adhere to these standards, recent changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP), impact how data is stored and brings new challenges and opportunities involving data storage for electronic records and document management. The changes that went into effect in December 2006 outline how electronic documents can be used to support litigation proceedings, as well as how electronic documents should be handled to support litigation search and discovery.
Electronic documents include traditional documents stored on electronic media as well as unstructured documents including email, Instant Messages (IM), SMS text messages, Word documents, spread sheets and slide decks, among others.
This guide examines the legal implications for message archiving and focuses on compliance with these regulations. It also explores the benefits of outsourcing message archiving and what to look for in a message archiving vendor.
