Facebook has announced that, for the first time in the company’s history, it has more than 2 million advertisers, a doubling of numbers in 18 months.

According to eMarketer, Facebook accounted for 7.75% of all global digital ad revenues in 2014, and 18.4% of the global mobile ad market, up from 16.6% in 2013.

Facebook celebrated the news with a blog post and video thanking advertisers, many of them small businesses, for their support.

“Our mission is to make the world more open and connected, and an important part of that is helping people connect with businesses,” says the blog post.

According to Macquarie analyst Ben Schachter, Facebook is positioning itself as a “significant competitor to Google” which has 4 million advertisers.

“Facebook also has a substantial opportunity to deepen its relationship with individual advertisers as it demonstrates the platform’s effectiveness to reach target demographics,” added Schachter. “As the company builds out its ad network and broadens its video offerings, we should see a ramp in per-advertiser spend as well.”

Facebook has also just announced a new iOS ad management app, currently available in the U.S. but soon to be rolled out worldwide. The new mobile ad manager app will give the social network’s 2 million advertisers the ability to monitor or create ads from anywhere. An Android version will be released later in the year.
