Surveys reveal email still going strong

Fluent's second annual Inbox Report suggests that Americans are more addicted to email today than ever before.

by Helen Leggatt

Fluent's survey of 2,000 Americans, to examine their perceptions and attitudes towards email marketing, found that 40% start their day by checking emails and 2 in 3 check their email at least a few times a day. Most have just one email address (63%) while 10 years or so ago the majority would have two more email addresses.

Americans, says Fluent, are "glued to their inbox" and more so via mobile. Nearly 3 in 4 (73%) respondents who most often use smartphones to check their email said they do so more than once a day. This is 19% higher than those who primarily check on another device.

A quarter of email users have a notification set so that they can view incoming emails immediately.

Furthermore, 3 in 5 Americans don't expect email to become obsolete any time soon and fully expect to use email about the same five years from now as they do today.

A recent survey by Mapp Digital found that, while checking email on laptop and desktop computers was nearly universal, nearly three-quarters (72%) now check their emails on a smartphone. That figure rises to 91% among Millennials and 83% among those between the ages of 25 and 34.
