Mobile is, quite literally, the key to the future of hotel booking

A report from Fuel earlier this year, '2016 Leisure Travel Trends: What Smart Hotels Need to Know', revealed the importance of mobile apps to travelers. More than half (52.2%) of consumers surveyed for the report said they would use a mobile app to purchase additional services and 61.4% would be willing to spend more for added value such as late checkouts and room upgrades via a mobile app. More than half (55.6%) would use a mobile app to check in.

"With more than 85% of travelers owning and using a smartphone, hoteliers need to focus on the benefits of this direct access to customers," said Stuart Butler, COO at Fuel. "The results overwhelmingly suggest that, not only is it time to invest in a mobile app, but it's also time to use your hotel-branded mobile app to generate new revenue streams and increase RevPAR (Revenue Per Available Room)." has just announced that they will soon enable customers to check in and out of hotels on their mobile app, and that app will also generate an electronic key on their mobile phone allowing them access to their room.

According to Neha Parikh, senior vice president of global brands and retail, more than two-thirds of consumers (67%) thought a hotel having such a capability would be a deciding factor when deciding where to stay.

The new function was developed with Zaplox, a mobile key service provider, and is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2017.
