Christmas Day the busiest for mobile

Christmas day is when mobile phones are used more than at any other time of the year, according to new research from Criteo, with two out of three transactions completed on a smartphone in between unwrapping presents and eating turkey.

The busiest shopping day on mobile in the UK is Christmas Day, according to Criteo. While Black Friday sees the biggest peaks in sales volume (246%), two-thirds of online purchases are made on Christmas Day using a mobile phone, and more than half (52%) of shoppers are buying presents for themselves, taking advantage of the sales.

"For retailers, it's clear that effective mobile marketing is all they should want for Christmas," said ‎Gregory Gazagne, EVP EMEA at Criteo. "Even when we think the shopping has ended and the stores have closed on Christmas Day, consumers all over the country are turning back to their phones to take advantage of early deals, avoid the queues and buy things that Santa did not bring."

Additional findings from Criteo's research include:

- 73% of consumers say they use their mobile device to browse/search mobile sites and apps for gift inspiration;

- 30% use mobile during their spare time to make impulse purchases in the run-up to Christmas Day;

- 22% of shoppers compile wish lists via apps, websites or social media.
