Merchants: 3 Amazon myths and how to bust them

Shopping on Amazon is simple, ask nearly any shopper. Selling on Amazon, though, isn't always easy. One expert offers advice for merchants to increase their profile and sell better within Amazon.

Myth #1: Selling on Amazon is your business

"Sellers can't afford to put all of their eggs in the Amazon basket. A successful eCommerce seller must recognize that Amazon is just one of many sales channels and ensure they have a diverse sales portfolio. In addition to Amazon, sellers can benefit from having a presence on other marketplaces such as eBay, Jet and Walmart. They should also take a page out of the Amazon playbook by creating excellent customer service experiences on their own websites. On an "owned" site sellers are able to provide VIP-only sales, exclusive products and customer rewards programs. These opportunities aren't available on Amazon alone," said Ohad Hagai, VP of Marketing, Feedvisor.

Myth #2: When Amazon offers new programs it must be a smart business decision to participate

"Just because Amazon is launching a new initiative doesn't mean it's the best fit for every business. Sellers must work backward, considering each opportunity and testing it against their overall business goals. Doing so will mean saying no to some of Amazon's latest and greatest offerings, but will also ensure any new initiatives that are adopted align with broader objectives," said Hagai.

Myth #3: Lowest Price Always Wins the Buy Box

"Not always, but it can help. The Buy Box takes a number of factors into consideration, including price, fulfillment network, stock levels, performance metrics, etc. The end goal is to provide customers with the best possible experience. In order to compete for the Buy Box, sellers have to be dynamic in their pricing, constantly adjusting and adapting as needed, while also meeting their seller performance metrics," said Hagai.
