YouTube viewing outpaces cable TV among teens

New viewing habits among U.S. teens reveals that, for the first time, more youngsters are consuming content on YouTube than on cable TV.

Piper Jaffray's latest 'Taking Stock With Teens' survey involved more than 10,000 teens from 46 U.S. states. It found that, while around a quarter (26%) watch YouTube on a daily basis, slightly less (25%) regularly watch cable TV.

It is the first time that the online video platform has outpaced traditional television in the States. Netflix was the most popular streaming platform among teens with 37% saying they used the service daily while just 3% used Hulu and Amazon Prime.

However, Amazon Prime adoption was shown to have grown with the latest survey indicating Amazon Prime exists in 58% of households of the teens surveyed.

The survey also asked its teens about their social media habits. Snapchat was found to lead field, with 37% visiting daily followed by Instagram is second place, while Twitter and Facebook tied for third.
