Forecast: Holidays could be a boon to retailers

While most experts agree holiday shopping will likely only see increases of about 3%, one new report suggests that, because the season will be longer than usual, retailers may see larger revenue increases than that.

Researchers with Valassis point out that Hanukkah begins this year on December 24, which will increase the season by a few days.

"This year, retailers have a unique opportunity with increased consumer spending and an extended shopping timeframe," said Curtis Tingle, chief marketing officer, Valassis. "In order to take advantage of this, retailers must listen to what shoppers want, which is relevant, timely deals. Leveraging offers to draw customers in, whether through online or in-store shopping, will enable them to come out on top this holiday season."

Valassis researchers also found:

• 91% of 'value seeking' shoppers are likely to use coupons during the holidays
• 53% of those say they used coupons while shopping during the 2015 holiday season
• 59% of mothers use coupons
• 68% of Hispanic shoppers use coupons
• 92% of affluent shoppers use coupons

Most 'brand loyal' shoppers say they use coupons while holiday shopping (83%).
