Study finds 2/3s purchase via mobile

There has been a significant increase in mobile commerce over the past few years, and new data from HookLogic finds that more than two-thirds (67%) of shoppers have now made a purchase via a mobile device.

According to HookLogic's new Online Shopper Survey about one-third of online purchases are now made on impulse. Researchers polled more than 600 shoppers in May of 2016.

"The big takeaway is that brands really need to be everywhere, and they need to move quickly. Show them the product faster, ship them the product faster - prominence and convenience are key. The good news is this is all possible in our digital age. For example, simplifying their online search process through paid ads on ecommerce sites makes the entire shopping process easier and faster for the consumer while also producing revenue that could feed back into shipping costs for the retailer," said Patrick Cartmel, Senior Vice President, Client Service & Strategy, HookLogic.

Researchers found that nearly half (40%) of purchases are now made via mobile device, and that 60% of consumers are now making purchases on at least a monthly basis.

"We monitor an immense amount of shopping data constantly, so while nothing tends to catch us by surprise - it is interesting to note the huge amount of ecommerce activity happening in the Baby category. Millennial parents of young children are the ultimate ecommerce consumers: they are trying a whole range of new products, developing new brand loyalties and the ease of online ordering vastly improves their time-constrained lives," said Cartmel. "For example, Baby was the category that shoppers said they are most likely to buy on impulse (46%). In addition, nearly 77% of shoppers who have purchased a Baby Care item online do so once a month or more while in a category like Electronics, only 36% of purchasers do. Busy parents likely enjoy the ease of home delivery as they need to purchase frequently, while Electronics are clearly less of a necessity."
