BTS Wrap: In-store remains hotter than online

When it comes to buying back to school products, the in-store shoppers continue to outweigh those heading online. That's the word from a new Foresee report which notes that most BTS shoppers (72%) did their shopping in physical stores.

Foresee researchers have looked into shopping trends for the BTS season, but those trends can also indicate where shoppers will be during the upcoming holiday season. For instance, Foresee's data found that one-third (34%) of shoppers planned to shop with at least 3 different retailers; while there is no crystal ball for the holiday season, it seems plausible that shoppers will hit at least three retailers for those items, as well.

Other interesting findings from Foresee's data include:

• The majority of BTS dollars were spent on clothing
• 33% of high school students turned the Instagram for BTS inspiration, Facebook garnered the attention of 24%
• 26% of college students turned to Instagram, but 30% turned to Facebook
• 29% researched products via desktops, 13% made purchased on desktops
• 32% researched products in-store and 72% made purchases in-store

Meanwhile, HookLogic has released new shopper data from the back to school season, and among the findings was this: shoppers shopped longer than usual this year. According to their data BTS sales built slowly throughout the summer months, peaking in early August as the beginning of the school year drew closer.

Some of the more interesting findings include:

• August sales for lunch boxes and backpacks were 8 and 5 times the daily averages for June
• Shoppers ran search queries for backpacks 24 times more than average supplies
• Shoes were searched 10 times more often than average apparel products
