The top 5 reasons SEO agencies are fired

In their study of more than 500 businesses from around the world who have worked with an external SEO supplier in the last three years, Artios discovered the top reasons why those relationships failed.

A failure to reach long-term targets and a lack of transparency about the methods being used were the top reasons for the parting of ways, cited by 29% and 25% of businesses respectively. However, a lack of transparency was the leading cause of termination within the first six months, found Artios’s research, and smaller clients were less tolerant of a lack of transparency, and more likely to terminate early, than larger clients.

Rounding off the top five reasons are out-dated SEO techniques (15%), budget reallocation (10%) and unethical practices/manual penalties (8%).

“Traditional complaints such as unethical SEO techniques and failure to meet targets still factor prominently among the top reasons for terminations, but agencies are getting dropped in increasing numbers – and sooner – due to supplier-side secrecy,” says Artios on the company blog.
