Reports: BTS spend trending up

While most American kids head back to school this week, back to school shopping is far from over. That's the word from two new reports, which look at overall spending as well as trending purchases.

First, the National Retail Federation (NRF) continues to predict the overall back to school spending - including both primary/secondary schools and college/universities will top the $75 billion mark, an 11% increase over 2015 spending numbers. And, they remind retailers, even though many schools are already in session, there are a number of families who wait until later August or September to purchase school supplies. In fact, the NRF data suggests the average family had completed only about half of their back to school shopping by early August.

"It is evident that many families are still considering price and value when shopping for their back-to-school and college needs," NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. "Shopping early and often is a trend we have seen from many budget-conscious consumers over the last few years. In the weeks ahead, parents will take advantage of the aggressive deals that retailers will offer as they get ready to welcome the fall season merchandise."

Meanwhile, Hitwise, a division of Connexity, has identified some early trends with the 2016 back to school spend. Their data shows visits to the Hitwise Retail 500 increased just over 2% (YoY) for month ending August 13.

"Visits were up 2.6% during the four weeks ending August 13, 2016 versus the same period a year ago. That equates to approximately 100 million more online shopping visits this back to school season so far," write the Connexity experts.

Some of the top products included Ghostbusters and Pokemon backpacks and Hushpuppies shoes. For older students, hot products included the iPad Pro and Bento lunchboxes. College students were trending up on gaming chairs, Microsoft Surface Pro 4, and Kegerators.
