Survey reveals real opportunity in developing games for the over-50s

Games developers need to address the very real opportunity of developing games for the over-50s demographic, according to the results of a survey conducted by GfK on behalf of the ESA and AARP.

According to the survey, the US now boasts 41 million gamers over the age of 50 - an audience not to be sniffed at. Three-quarters of these older players play games weekly, and 40% play daily. Even among those gamers over the age of 60, 43% play video games every day.

As well as finding gaming entertaining, older gamers are also aware that playing games maintains mental acuity. The most popular types of games among the over-50s were found to be card/tile games (46%) and puzzle/logic games (44%). Furthermore, rather than consoles, computers (59%) and mobile devices (57%) were the most used devices for gaming among this age group. Nearly six in 10 play their games online.

"With the explosion of dynamic, compelling, and diverse content and the growing popularity of online gaming, video games are now an experience shared across generations of Americans," said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of ESA. "As Gen X turns 50 and Millennials raise tech-centric families, participation will only continue to expand just as games continue to evolve."
