Instagram reaches new milestone and announces translation button

Social network Instagram has notched up a new milestone, reaching a new community high of more than half a billion users. A new translation button has also been announced as Instagram's global audience grows.

On their official blog, Instagram has announced that they have now reached more than 500 million users. The Facebook-owned social network boasted 400 million users back in September last year and now has more than 300 million daily active users.

That puts Instagram ahead of its rival, Twitter, which currently has 310 million or so users each month of which around half log in every day, and Snapchat with its 100 million users.

In any one day, Instagram sees over 95 million photos and videos shared, with 4.2 billion likes on average.

Instagram's blog post also noted that 80% of its users are based outside of the U.S. Perhaps that is the driver behind Instagram's further announcement that, in the coming month, a translation button will be added to stories and 'profile bios' written in a language that is different from a user's own.

"The Instagram community has grown faster and become more global than we ever imagined," says the company's blog post. "And we're excited that you'll soon be able to understand the full story of a moment, no matter what language you speak."
