Ecommerce frequency increasing

The frequency of online shoppers hitting their favorite merchant sites is on the increase. That's the word from the new Walker Sand 2016 Future of Retail Study which finds about one-third of online shoppers are now visiting merchant sites at least weekly.

That weekly stat is up nearly 10% from 2015 levels; the research also shows that three-quarters of shoppers are visiting merchant sites at least monthly. As to what is driving these shoppers online - it's the shipping. Most (88%) shoppers surveyed said free shipping offers influence their purchases with one-day shipping offers pushing 69% of purchase decisions.

"The priority for retailers no longer lies in increasing the number of consumers who shop online, but rather improving their experience - whether it be online, in store or across different product categories," said Dave Parro, partner and vice president at Walker Sands. "Our findings indicate that retailers should be focusing their current efforts on pragmatic strategies to lay the groundwork for future growth."

Other interesting findings from the report include:

• 7 in 10 said they 'are interested' in in-store tracking and push notification incentives
• 42% of younger shoppers have used peer-to-peer payment methods in the past year
• 40% say they expect to have drone deliveries within the next 2 years
